[360] Alan Wake - Still awake

May is ridiculous: Alan Wake, R.D.R., Prince of Persia and 3d Dot Game Heroes for me.

Skate 3, UFC, Mario Galaxy 2, Split/Second, Modnation Racers, Backbreaker, Lost Planet 2 and June 1st has Alpha Protocol.

There's a huge amount of potential in a very short period of time. Not all of those will be awesome, some of them will be and several are likely to be very good or good enough.

The new AW video looks amazing and im very excited to pick up the game on May 18th.But that month is crowded with great games like RDR and Backbreaker.. =)

I'm a bit meh on LP 2 for some reason. What the hell is Alpha Protocol?

It's an action RPG, somewhat Mass Effect looking but in a Tom Clancy type setting. It's made by Obsidian, former Black Isle, who made Neverwinter Nights 2, KOTOR 2 and makers of the upcoming Fallout: New Vegas. Black Isle made the original Fallout series, Planescape Torment and Icewind Dale for the PC.

I don't think it's going to be very good, but some people are watching for it, just because of the heritage of the company.

I'm basically getting Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption and Mario Galaxy 2. Anything else will have to wait for a quieter month (June, July?).

Gifs from the video Billy Idol linked to -it's bandwidth intensive-. Graphically wise it's at a similar level to the graphical showcases this generation like, for instance, Uncharted 2 and it features a similar art style, in my opinion.

My favourite is this one, but I am sure it's a CG. It's so human and well depicted that it has to be one of the most realistic images I've seen in videogames, along with the Silent Hill's old man -that's to say, Silent Hill 3-

Nope, all in game. The developers said so.

Would be fun to know if the cutscenes in the game are 100% real time or just pre-recorded videos running on a superior machine.

EDIT:

The last gif, is just too good to be ingame...it has no faults or whatsoever, no visible poly edges, the water shader on the face is unlike I've ever seen before in a video game [even the one's with physics based water] etc etc

If you really want to know then head over to alanwake forum, you will get an answer to your questions.

They say it's in-game and heavily post-processed. We'll see. The game is supposed to be 4x MSAA, so it could look pretty clean.

HD version here:

With some post-processing as are most cutscenes in games.

Yeah, it's somewhat ambiguous what they mean. It's obviously a cutscene, and not "in-game", but I think he's probably meaning real-time and not pre-rendered. That part of the trailer is definitely something like 720p (I'm not a pixel counter) and not 480p which a pre-rendered vid would be on 360.

I like the look of the cutscene, they're very beautiful indeed but the actual gameplay graphics are somewhat dull in comparison. Maybe it's just the night scene, I wanna see more of hte day time scenery.

Even if not all of the stuff is in-game, but a cutscene....I am ultra impressed by the graphics. I assume some gamplay parts, where he fights...this just looks impressive for me and it looks like something I immediately want to play

Exactly, I can't understand how somebody can say the graphics of this game are dull.

The actual cinematics are all separate pre-rendered video files. We do have some sequences where we do what I guess could be called real-time cutscenes (like the "reveal camera" moments, for example), but percentagewise, those are definitely in the minority.

All of the cinematics have been rendered by our game engine, though. It's just that we use more high-resolution models because the camera tends to be a lot closer to the characters than during gameplay, and we throw in a bunch of post-processing to make things look very pretty.

I'm sure we've mentioned this before, but it's also worth pointing out that we do almost all of the major loading in the game during the cinematics -- I believe the only instances you will see a loading screen is when you die, and when you come back to the game after turning it off. (Unless I forgot something, but I'm pretty sure that's it.)

Hmm, sounds strange considering how story heavy this game is supposed to be. Could be that the majority of the story will playout during gameplay rather than cutscene...
