I could have sworn I'd posted this here previously but I can't find it so, guess not... Anyway, Freespace 2? I recently installed all the latest SCP content and nightly build that enables custom HUDs (for widescreen and such) and the Hollywood Effects package. Looks ace;

I made a guide to installing and configuring it all, if anyone's interested. I posted it on the Facepunch forums so you might need an account there to view it. I'd make a thread with it all here but I'm honestly not sure enough people really care...

All the links should still work just fine.

*edit* Ok one link is down. The file 3613_Update.7z can be found on this mirror;

http://swc.fs2downloads.com/files/ - It's right near the top.

Well I'm certainly interested, and so should everyone else be
go read a review fs2 is rated as one of the greatest games of all time it's up there with halflife and deusex

ps: does that build have the cockpits and track-ir support ?

this isnt working do you have an alt link

Next, download the Media VP's 3.6.13 update, from here;

http://mvp.fsmods.net/3612/3613_Update.7z

Sure thing, grab it from this mirror;

Right near the top.

I haven't got a TrackIR and I never really bothered to follow the 3d cockpit support (I assume you mean the modelled cockpits, right? That's still pretty experimental for the retail game, I haven't heard much about it in ages). The build I've specified to download is the latest Antipodes 7 release, so it should support any features introduced in past builds. The only thing newer than it is the Antipodes 8 release, and that's mostly just pilot code cleanup and porting so I don't think there's anything specific to cockpits in that. As for TrackIR, you should have full support in the build I linked...

The next bunch of Antipodes builds will focus on various bugfixing and code cleanup that is more or less chump change kind of stuff as far as just playing the game is concerned.

So basically, TrackIR should work, and although the 3d cockpit code should be in there, I can't say if it works or how to use it at this stage. I did read into a discussion a few months back about 3d cockpits, and there were even some pretty screenshots of it in action, but I never saw anything usable by you or me. I'd be happy to look into that though ;)

*edit* Ok I did some digging... There was a lot of discussion about 3d cockpits around December, and there was an SVN release made available, but it was buggy and messed a lot of things up. The thread ended up just hanging without any fixes. At this stage, it looks like 3d cockpit support is strictly internal or for mod development by experienced coders only.

This is an example of one of the cockpit types;

And a vid of the code in action on another mod;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5sSvlY8MNI

But I think we'll be waiting a while before there's a stable FS2 retail 3d cockpit release with associated build.

*edit 2* If you really want to have a fiddle with it, give this thread a try. The first post has some good info, but I'm not sure if all the code still works or if the links are all good. Up to you;

This is really impressive MOD. Coming from Atmosfear i was surprised to have improved quality and similar or better performance. Higher res grass and improved trees makes a world of difference. The textures seem the same ones but with turned up contrast, maybe im wrong tough.

The only small critic i could make to those screens and in my case (since im using similar values) is that it looks a bit overcast even in the middle of the day with a clear sky.

Thanks sobek
ps: a question

ive got the retail media vp's in the root folder
I also have a mediavps folder containing mvcomplete (1.19gb) from 3.6.10 among other files (see screenshot) can i delete this folder ?

the last guide said create a mediavp folder for the vp's has that now changed to create a mediavp*version number* folder

Just to clarify - I'm guessing you're using an existing FS2 install that's previously had the Freespace 2 SCP content installed? I would have recommended starting from scratch, but this *should* all work (I'm just worried about leftover files or configs or some such somewhere that could be problematic).

So I take it you've followed my guide and set everything up in the MEDIAVPS_3612 folder as it directs, but you also have that old mediavps folder still there from your previous installation? If that's the case, then yeah sure, you can delete that just fine. Though technically you could also just leave it there if you wanted, as the game *should* only read data from the working mod directory as specified in the launcher (covered in the guide too).

Just to be clear also; old pilot data doesn't work on newer versions of the SCP content. So any pilot data you created for the 3.6.10 release most likely won't work with the 3.6.12 release (this is one reason why starting from scratch is always recommended, so you can avoid old data screwing with the new install). It sucks because you lose any unlocked missions, but if you just want to play mods you can, or you can just cheat to show all of the missions in the mission simulator section of the main menu.

See how you go, but yeah feel free to delete that old mediavps folder (I suppose I could have just said that in the first line :p )

Another quick question for ya sobek
when you unrar holly.rar you end up with a holly folder does this go into mediavps or does the contents go into the mediavps folder ?

ps: in the 7z archive containing the exe's there are also 2 pdb files (about 50mb) what the hell are these ?

I wouldn't worry about the PDB files, they're generated from Debug builds of the main exe's. They were supposed to have been done away with at one stage and I'm sure they have, but certain builds will contain these because they can help with troubleshooting. You shouldn't have any issues if you choose to delete them.

For the hollywood effects stuff, when you extract it you should have 4 folders (effects, missions, scripts, tables). In your MEDIAVPS_3612 folder, there should be another folder called Data. If there isn't, create it. In that Data folder is where you put those 4 extracted folders from the hollywood effects package, overwriting anything if asked. The reason I said there might be VP files in my guide is because the creator will at some stage be repacking it all in a nice neat new VP file with lots more content, and I can't be certain when that will happen ;)

Also one other thing. I did some more digging and it looks like you need to put one additional DLL file into the main Freespace 2 directory in order to get TrackIR working right. Grab it from here;

http://www.mediafire.com/?ihzkihqj2ky

I had the 4 folders in mediavps_3612 fs2 worked
then i extracted them to mediavps_3612\data
and I now get this error

your original guide says
"
Once you have this, extract it, and place the extracted files (should be either more VP file/s or a bunch of folders for scripts and tables etc) into the MEDIAVPS_3612 directory you put in your Freespace 2 folder before (so all of the Hollywood Effects files and such are in the same directory as the MediaVP files)."

now youve changed it to mediavps_3612\data

just to recap this is what you have ?

this is what i get when i run a debug build

Mmm, you're right. Probably best to just leave the hollywood effects stuff out. My brother likes to use it though because it does do things a fair bit more flashy than the stock 3.6.12 does, but clearly for some reason it's causing you grief. I did once have similar errors when I first used it, and I believe the solution was to delete one of the script files since it seemed to be bugging out.

I guess just take it out of the picture and see how things fare ;)

Sorry for getting some things mixed up. Due to our time differences in posting, I'm always at work when it comes time to reply and end up having to work off memory, as I don't have a FS2 install here at work :p

Not really a game but just had my case back from the powder coaters as well as installing my water blocks on my 5850's, notice my little 9800GT used for PhysX duty :D
