Awesome news! Few questions:

1. Is it possible to do this over internet, or just over local WiFi?
2. What bandwith is needed?
3. Is there any latency?
4. What do you think, will online mutliplayer games use this feature?

Would this not somehow limit the design of a PS3 game in terms of getting it to work with the PSP controls?

For this title, it is rather gimmicky. Looking forward though, I think the idea is you download titles onto PS3 HDD and then can play them on PSP anywhere. Some things like Calling All Cars and Echochrome will suit PSP nicely and give you a more portable way to play when away from home. Assuming Wifi is available!

i dont understand, is this for if your tv exploded? Seems a bit gimmicky.

Well, not everyone has a multiple HDTV's. What if someone in your family memebers decides to hijact your TV to watch some Spanish Soap opera :D

And we still dont know if this is woriking over the net.

I think F1 uses the PSP as well. You can use the PSP like the side mirrors to see what's behind you while driving

Lair has become an AAA+ 10.0 title (as a game realized on PSP, no less )

When your family member has to watch something on a HDTV in a living room you can bring PSP and a TV-out cable to play a PS3 game on another TV.

IMO, it's more interesting to think about doing it over the internet, although obviously control lag increases. Access to a PS3-based collection of games from your PSP anywhere in the world is a pretty neat concept. And with video-out on the new PSPs, you can play such games, view your photos/videos etc. on any big screen near you too when away from home.

There's a Youtube video here of Lair over a local network. It looks playable enough despite lag.

Still no one mentions is it possible to play Lair over net.

PS3 > net > PSP > TV output :D

Yeah, that's the whole point with remote play - accessing your pictures, music, videos, soon TV, PS3-games, friendlist etc over the internet location free from anywhere.

Lair is the first big game to support this and I hope more games follow suit, especially games that involves much leveling up and such.

Now this is something to show off to coworkers. "Check out my PSP. It has the same graphical capabilities as the PS3!" ;)

About as well as VNC does for gaming, I'd gather. Which is to mean not well at all.

The uplink bandwidth requirements for a relatively uncompressed video stream @ 480x272/30fps would probably be prohibitive.

Has anyone tried watching movies remotely? Ie not in your house from an access point connected up to the PS3 but actually from somewhere else in your city/country/universe? :p

This is what I most want to see with the PS3/PSP. I don't have the latter yet (been holding out for the redesigned version). I want to rip/recompress all my Star Trek/B5/X-Files boxed episodes and put them all on my PS3 so I can watch them when I'm away.

In the past we had books. Noow we have gadgets!

Peace.

PSP can stream movies from the HDD, but copyrighted DVD's and BD's are of the limits...

I did. It's choppy for video viewing. Photo and music remote playback is much more acceptable. The best option for portable video is still the memory stick.

I am a little confused now after all the Lair attack. Let me take sometime to absorb this. Is this confirmed ? Or is it just a rumor ?

Meanwhile, I've just read that it's possible to use RemotePlay + EyeToy (the old one) as some sort of remote security/survelliance camera. You'll need to create a dummy local friend account in XMB and then start iChat (from RemotePlay).

Has someone tried it yet ?

Certainly interesting, but any hotel I've ever been to with net access.... well it wouldn't be even close to playable. As for streaming content, a number of free servers perform the same on the PC already. Cool, though a few years ahead of its time at this point.

Which wont be happening anytime soon for the obvious reasons of games being on disc, unless we all become jedi and use the force to change games. When digital distribution takes over then i'd agree, it would indeed be very cool. For now it wont be happening, and especially not from Sony which has a huge reason to keep data on disc formats considering thats part of their business. It may be an area for Nintendo to break into considering how hugely popular they are in portables. Having your entire library of DS/gamecube/wii games loaded onto your Nintendo console of the future and playable remotely would be something i'd almost expect from them by 2010-2015, at least its more likely to me than Sony doing it. The idea is neat in its current form but the amount of limitation keeps it gimmicky.

I thought he meant playing a Blu-ray game in his own PS3. Or PSN games in his own PS3 HDD. As you know games are less DRM-bound than DVDs wrt video output, so what's the problem?

As long as upload bandwidth in your home can serve a 480x272 video stream encoded in realtime by Cell and latency is not prohibitively big you should be able to play it over internet. It was previously discussed that non-action games would be suitable, but now seeing Lair playable like that it's more promising.

I wrote about the viability of such services before
