Unreal Tournament III Discussion *renamed*

UT3 PS3 Slower Because Controllers Suck

Controllers can't handle the frantic speed of Unreal Tournament III according to Mark Rein:

"When you play Halo on PC, you notice the difference too, yeah? This is also the reason why we don’t have cross-platform play, between PC and PS3, because you have got to make some compromises for each platform. But you play Halo on console and you find that it’s slower too, right…they have to be slower, because your fingers are just not as precise as your whole arm, right? To me the movement and speed as a console gamer is just right.”

Sorry Mark, UT3 is fun because of the speed. Without it, it's just another prettified shooter with vehicles and well-designed levels.

This is just a bit ridiculous imo. If they could (finally) allow a KB/M to play UT3 on a console, surely they could have made the pace of the game faster (Those that want the option) for those using the KB/M setup. They are already going be able to divide between KB/M vs. controller, so why not also allow the PS3 KB/M players the option for the PC pace play & then allow the PC players to play the PS3 KB/M players. Good gosh they could have even made it so the PC players had the option of a slower game speed if they so choose it. Isn't this gen really all about the options?

For those that haven't seen the PS3 game footage, look here. http://www.gametrailers.com/player/28195.html The speed is sower, but honestly its not game hindering even for the PC players.

Support it in a mod...?

I say support it in the game & stop leaving these sorts of things to the modders/mutators. Its not as if there are not thousands of controller players that think they couldn't beat a KB/M player. So let the player decide how they want to play.

Meh! Not that me complaining is going to change anything but its like they take one step forward then four steps back. Why the heck even bother adding the KB/M support now? Personally I may like the slower speed better but it would be great to have the option to play whom I like at what ever speed I like.

Does anyone honestly think that a modder is going to be able to make a mod to allow PC vs. PS3 play? Wouldn't Sony block this?

Edit: Maybe I should be posting this on the UT3 forums.

Yeah seemed quite a bit slower paced than the PC version. The fast-paced gameplay is what attracts me most in this game, refreshing I say. But I am shure it can easily be modded with a mutator which would change the movment speed for players.

But thinking about it, wouldn't moving faster put more pressure machines streamming abilities (not perfomance wise but instead how fast it moves new data into RAM), just a thought?

Perhaps cross-platform play just doesn't work. Almost no dev has done it yet. The only game I can think of is Shadowrun, but I don't know how well that works since it's pretty much an ass game.

Sigh.

Cross platform works perfectly fine I'm sure. You can run a dedicated PS3 server on your comp & connect to it from the PS3. They are just blocking the PC vs. PS3 due to thinking you have to play at a slower pace on the PS3. Why you need a slower pace on the PS3 when you use a KB/M is beyond me. I can see the need for the slower pace when using a controller though. So back on track, its totally ridiculous to prevent PS3 vs. PC when the PS3 player decides to use a KB/M.

This is from Mark Rein. http://news.spong.com/article/14406?cb=91

Edit: Before I get the (well there is your answer, the controller needs a slower pace). Really? Not disputing that. My point is, if you can (which has been stated already) separate the KB/M players from the Controller players on servers then would it really be so hard to separate the controller players from the PC players, but allow the PS3 KB/M players full access to the PC players? I think not.

Edit again: Before I get asked where its stated the dedicated PC can serve a PS3 game.
Bit-Tech have an interview with Mark Rein covering UT3, there's an interesting feature for the PS3 version which I can't say I was aware of:

So, the PlayStation 3 and PC version aren’t compatible at all?

“Not quite. There’s still some interaction between them. If you own both then you can start up your PC and set it to run a dedicated server just for PS3 and use that, which is so, so cool in my opinion." http://www.bit-tech.net/bits/2007/11/11/mark_rein_ps3_physx_and_pwnage/2

Maybe it's not worth it to customize the PS3 that deeply. The portion of PS3 owners so fanatical about FPS's that they have K&M attached to their console (either the PS3 by the desk, or they bought some lapboard stuff), yet do not own a PC powerful enough to play UT3, is undoubtedly a tiny, tiny percentage of owners.
