AMD: R7xx Speculation

Wow!

HD 4870 CF should reach > 30 fps without problem in crysis very high 1900x1200 with 4AA.

This is the greatest thing that has happened to 3d graphics industry since Voodoo 1, above all by the possibilities it can bring to us in the future.

I actually think the HD4850 in CF could do better. Remember it is 1920*1200 wit h4xAA on effective 512MB of VRAM. Whilst the GTX280 has 1GB VRAM. At that resolution 512MB is not enough with 4xAA and very high setting.

Code:
                     8800GT     HD4850
                     ------    -------
ArmaArma Mark 1.0 :    2830       3820
CoD4 Max AA4x     :      58         75  FPS
Quake 3 (OpenGL)  :     395        550  FPS

Hmm, I somehow fail to see why everybody seems to be so suprised by these scores???
Everybody already believed that a 4850 will equal or be a bit faster than a 9800GTX. And since a 9800GX2 (which is slower than two 9800GTX) is already roughly as fast (looking at average framerates) if not faster than a 280GTX, why would anyone be surprised that 4850 CF beats a GTX 280???

Probably because many believed that the GTX280 will be the end all and be all. So when something beats it, it's a surprise.

The other factor is likely because the 4870x2 was supposed to compete with the GTX280 but a 4850CF already does.

Maybe they -or someone else- can hack it to run on the GTX 280/260.
Then we could see who'd be the real performance king for this generation. ;)

I'd love to see that happen. I say that both sarcastically (in the sense that it is unlikely to occur given NV's lack of full DX10.1 support) and seriously (because if it did happen, it would be interesting to see what kind of performance the GTX 280 would achieve given the constraints).

Code:
System: ?

                     8800GT     HD4850
                     ------    -------
ArmaArma Mark 1.0 :    2830       3820
CoD4 Max AA4x     :      58         75 FPS
Quake 3 (OpenGL)  :     395        550 FPS
Code:
Gigabyte X38-DQ6 + Q6700 @3GHZ
Assassin's Creed, 1920x1200, Max Setting:
HD 3870 -> 35 FPS
HD 4850 -> 60 FPS
AMD Phenom 9850 @ 3 GHz
CrossFire HD 4850
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit + SP1

3DMark06 1920x1200 4xAA 16xAF -> 13897

World in Conflict (Patch 1.008)
DX10 1920x1200 4xAA 16xAF, Max Settings -> 48 FPS (avg)

You mean 4870X2 3-way CrossFireX ;)

That could be both a driver performance tuning nightmare (it's progressively harder to scale across 2, 3 or 4 GPU's, now imagine 6...) and a physical impossibility (unless the HD4870 X2 now has two Crossfire connectors, that is).
The cold, hard fact is that nothing will likely touch a standard three-way SLI setup with 3 GTX 280's for the remainder of 2008.

Heh, I understand the enthusiasm guys, but this thread is getting quite noisy... So please try to improve content/post a bit? Cheers! :D
