Bitboys and 'Graphics hardware for handheld devices'

Quantum computers might actually be based on "todays" silicon litography technology, see this EETimes article. And don't forget that programming a quantum computer will be very different from what we have today. Don't expect them to run serialized code all that well. What makes them interesting...

    Tech-Report R300/NV30/DX9 preview

Well, what people are aiming for today isn't strictly speaking "realistic" CG but rather "photo realistic" CG. Even the best display devices are a far cry from fooling they eye it's looking at something real. To really, really make it realistic we would need not only much higher resolution...

    Tech-Report R300/NV30/DX9 preview

OK, so it's a bit strong to say "always", but what was probably meant was "for the foreseeable future". Famous computer graphics pioneer James Blinn made the observation that "Rendering time is constant." eg, as more processing power becomes available, artists will add more detail, crank up...

    Tech-Report R300/NV30/DX9 preview

Yupp, Blinn's law will prevail! However, if gfx cards gain the accuracy and functionality necessary to accelerate offline rendering, we might se a sudden big leap in the quality of special effects on the big screen. The one thing that is often missing in scenes that look CG is accurate...

ATI renames R300 chip, planning earlier shipments

<speculation>Hm, I wonder if that refers to Radeon 9500 (but that is supposed to have a reduced core, no?) or a possible upgrade with DDR-II memory as those chips become available..? I got the impression that they'll wait for the R350 before going down to .13u?</sepculation> EDIT: No...

    Tech-Report R300/NV30/DX9 preview

Hasn't ati said something about going with more product cycles? Which implies more refreshes. I wonder if that translates into a refresh of R300 with the same chip - possible clocked higher - but with DDR-II memory when those memory modules become available? Or would that be too dense...

    Tech-Report R300/NV30/DX9 preview

Yup, good article. One thing though, he states that which seems to indicate that he too has fallen for the DDR-II = quad bits per clock and pin myth. Unless of course he means in the long term but then comparing would be essentially useless. In the short term a ~50% increase sounds more...

    Cell

I'm no expert at this, but doesn't ~50M (~43%) sound a little high concidering that the GF4Ti has ~14M (~22%)? Anyway I'd say it's questionable if they can deliver what they promise, but not impossible. Does anyone know what feature width they are targeting cell at? How will the fact that...

    Cell

Gubbi, is it really that unlikely to achieve 375M transistors by 2005? I mean R300 already has 117M at .15u. Assuming equal transistors/area ratio you could fit 375M into the same area as an R300 by shrinking the die to ~.08u. Intel and others are already working on .09u and .065u...

    One trick on the R300...

Assuming that the rumor is true - the 9500 will be essentially a four pipeline 9700, with the fierce competition in the 3d graphics business I don't think it makes much sense to intentionally degrade good 9700s to 9500s. More likely the majority of 9500s will be manufactured with only four...

    Explanation of nv30 screens

The images were on page three. They were the same as has been seen elsewhere, and they were probably removed because they were slashdotted - not because of doubts of origin. Regards / ushac

    Hardware Virtual Memory Management

I was under the impression that it was more of a virtual memory mapping thingy like you find in operating systems. That the momery handler in the P10 can swap "blocks" of data out to main RAM like the OS can swap blocks of memory from RAM to disk, trying to keep the most used parts in fast...

    NV-30 to have.............

Um, I get it to ~19.2Gb/s with 256bit DDRII @ 300Mhz (DDRII does NOT transfer four bits per clock.) But with the upcoming DDRII memory from Samsung that runs at 500Mhz (1Ghz effectively) it would mean ~32Gb/s. That's still pretty amazing. Regards / ushac

    R300 pics?!!{56k warning}

Well, if these images are fake then they're admirably well done. Much better than the R200 MAXX picture that just surfaced. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's a real card. If it's an R300 let alone a final design, will be left unsaid. Regards / ushac

    RGB Signal range question

What, changing the analog stage to output 1V instead of the spec'ed 750mV? I guess on an LCD you'd loose detail in bright areas as anything above 750mV level will be the seme full white, depending on how it handles gamma - in analog or digital domain etc). On a CRT you'd likely get some degree...
