Current Generation Games Analysis Technical Discussion [2023] [XBSX|S, PS5, PC]

Star Citizen is at something like $700 Million in funding so far with, according to the developers, all of that going towards development.

Do you think there will be a mid gen refresh console from Sony and Microsoft?

This. The difference between nVidia and AMD in terms of ray tracing and upscaling isn't a time thing. It's just an implementation thing. They chose different solutions to the same problems. There's no reason AMD couldn't catch up performance wise with their next gen GPUs if they choose to spend...

Isn't that what Infinity Cache is for?

Current Generation Games Analysis Technical Discussion [2022] [XBSX|S, PS5, PC]

I wonder how much Infinity Cache would have helped in these new consoles. On paper, it seems like they have plenty of bandwidth but I wonder how IC would act with the shared memory?

    Next-Generation NVMe SSD and I/O Technology [PC, PS5, XBSX|S]

What? Memory bandwidth needs to scale with GPU performance and not necessarily memory size. Since we're not increasing GPU performance in my scenario then memory bandwidth doesn't really matter. Having more RAM would most definitely help offset slower SSD performance with intelligent...

    Next-Generation NVMe SSD and I/O Technology [PC, PS5, XBSX|S]

I wonder if Microsoft or Sony had gone around to developers and gave them 2 choices: 16GB RAM and fast nvme SSD storage 32GB RAM and regular old SATA SSD storage Which would developers have wanted? I'm pretty sure the obvious answer is 32GB RAM. What's the lowest that number can go and...

Current Generation Games Analysis Technical Discussion [2022] [XBSX|S, PS5, PC]

I think it's more that Nxgamer is a very obvious Playstation fanboy and whenever he runs into these sort of situations he automatically jumps to "the Series X RAM set up is a limitation" or "the Series X SSD isn't fast enough" or "the Series X GPU clockspeed is slower" as reasons instead of...

    Next-Generation NVMe SSD and I/O Technology [PC, PS5, XBSX|S]

Direct Storage doesn't mean GPU decompression (or any sort of hardware decompression).

Digital Foundry Article Technical Discussion [2021]

Is there a reasonable answer for why devs aren't just going for resolution parity between PS5 and XSX and then increasing detail/quality elsewhere with the extra GPU horsepower of the XSX?

Current Generation Games Analysis Technical Discussion [2020-2021] [XBSX|S, PS5, PC]

Random thought/question: How will SFS affect Quick Resume? Presumably, if you're playing a game that utilizes SFS and then exit that game, whatever is in memory gets caches to the SSD. But all the texture data that's getting cached will be in bits and pieces since that's what SFS does. Is...

Current Generation Games Analysis Technical Discussion [2020-2021] [XBSX|S, PS5, PC]

Does the game use Sampler Feedback Streaming on Xbox? Or would that not make any difference for initial level loads because it (I'm assuming) needs rendered frames to "sample" and get "feedback"?

Do we know if the Xbox is doing hardware compression when saving RAM to storage for Quick Resume?

    Next-Generation NVMe SSD and I/O Technology [PC, PS5, XBSX|S]

1/6th the write speed of the SN850 would put it at a bit under 1000 MB/s. So it would take like 14-15 seconds to copy RAM to disc versus the 5-6 seconds of the Xbox. Not really a big deal, honestly.

    Next-Generation NVMe SSD and I/O Technology [PC, PS5, XBSX|S]

I don't really know what you're asking... It's a pretty safe bet that the combination of DirectStorage, fast SSDs, and GPU decompression will offer performance that beats the PS5. The PS5 is only impressive because nobody expected a console to have such fast storage but compared to the...
