    Nvidia Pascal Announcement

What extra coding is required for knl? Could you please describe it for me?

    Nvidia Pascal Announcement

Look at all the comments from people who have some experience with Phi. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12293308 Not a single positive review at the time of writing this post. It's Phi that's dying, not the GPU, it would appear.

How would you program the FPGA? There is a lot of CUDA code out there right now. Phi+FPGA would face this sunk cost mountain and I don't see how it can deliver the 10x perf/W advantage over GPU necessary to motivate code porting.

Does GP102 (the one in consumer titan x) have double precision? How fast is it? 1/2 rate, 1/3 rate, 1/32 rate?

Metal API for MacOS Sierra 10.12

They seem to have a new tessellation path. They seem to have replaced the vertex shader with a compute kernel. And gotten rid of geometry shader altogether.

VR might prove to be the killer app for ray tracing, with foveated rendering and all. May be IMG's ray tracing efforts aren't doomed.

What do you think about getting rid of manual paging management and letting the GPU fetch pages from CPU memory upon a page fault, just like normal page miss? Resource streaming from disk could be handled by mmaping them. Devs could always issue prefetch hints for max perf.

You make a good point about being CPU limited, especially with a 15W CPU driving a 250W GPU. Let me make two points. a) For me, there is a great value in this kind of setup. I can take my laptop and do work on it from everywhere and when I plug in to a dock, I get many more display outs, ie 3...

Interesting hack. There is opportunity to ray trace only certain tiles. Practical optimization for reflection.

And as great as Carmack is, his endorsements mean what? There is no business case for investing in ray tracing apps without consumers owning the hardware and no business case for making ray tracing hardware without availability of apps. IMGTEC makes neither. The only way this stalemate breaks...

IMGTEC cannot push ray tracing, no matter how much they want it. They sit too far from devs/users for that. Only a soc owner with a lot of dev influence can do this. That leaves Intel/NV/Apple.
