Digital Foundry Article Technical Discussion [2017]

Ok it is running at 2 times the resolution comparing minimums. 2.3 times or 2 times the resolution.

Seriously? One is running at 2.3 times the resolution and both versions only drop 1-2 fps. It's not a take your pick situation. Don't pretend you can catch an occasional drop to 59fps lol. That's getting to be quite a stretch.

Server based game augmentations. The transition to cloud. Really possible?

It is CPU. They are comparing a multiple of whatever percentage of CPU time they are dedicating to physics when using the Xbox alone. So the 20 times multiple is based on some unknown percentage of the Xbox cpu. Watching the videos you can get a pretty significant amount of destruction before...

Server based game augmentations. The transition to cloud. Really possible?

This is amazing! He also qualified the "power" as an increase relative to the CPU time used just for physics on the console. So if they only use 30% (no idea) of CPU locally then each power increase is based on that. A 10 fold physics increase would only require equivalent of 2-3 Jaguar CPUs...

Server based game augmentations. The transition to cloud. Really possible?

When I set up a virtual machine with azure it was billed by the minute. Seeing that Microsoft own Azure I'm sure they can set up the billing to be favorable if it is a service they believe in. Obviously they do or they wouldn't be pursuing this. Also, the fees associated with a proof of concept...

Server based game augmentations. The transition to cloud. Really possible?

The 1:1 ratio is a key point. Many users simultaneously taking advantage of the same set of physics calculations and memory. I also don't think they are making up the 20 times performance number. The peak CPU performance is required for what instance in time? There will be long stretches where...

    Star Wars Battlefront [PS4, XO]

This has excellent description of the techniques along with demonstrations of results of using photogrammetry. It really is a big step forward. http://www.theastronauts.com/2014/03/visual-revolution-vanishing-ethan-carter/

Rumour confirmed: Microsoft Purchase Minecraft for $2.5B (Post#122)

I think it would be a great title for Microsoft to use to help launch an online subscription gaming service. It will work on every device but you must subscribe. Along with other Microsoft games.. Halo etc..

Realistically both options are identical.. the jump from 900 to 1080 is barely noticeable and the drop from 60 to 55 on rare occasions is not noticeable. So sure its 100% worth it since an insignificant change gives them a huge marketing advantage since 1080p is the indoctrinated next gen benchmark.

NHL 15 - The reveal all of you (just me) have been waiting for!

Haha that would be awesome. It sucks having no blood rules in sports games. New trailer is amazing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jEgFzpsPMA

Looking like a pretty big step up for the NHL series. :)

News & Rumors: Xbox One (codename Durango)

So once external hard drive support is added what do you think the prospects are of allowing the preloading of full games to external drives / USB at Best Buy for internet cap people? A simple touch screen kiosk with the games available to copy over to whatever you bring in? It will allow...

Server based game augmentations. The transition to cloud. Really possible?

Just a preamble that I'm not trying to argue and I'm ready to learn/discuss. The exact same examples could be used to augment a single player game. The only difference I see is that it is the multiplayer server managing the forwarding of the cloud results and giving all the clients a time it...

Server based game augmentations. The transition to cloud. Really possible?

I thought this is exactly what we have been describing the cloud to be? Dedicated servers that can spawn new instances on demand. We are looking for situations that are latency tolerant. A 64 player battlefield game with "massive" CPU resources available for brief periods of time on demand to...

Server based game augmentations. The transition to cloud. Really possible?

In a multiplayer game physics results for a single detonation could be used by all players. So if something such as leaving explosives anywhere on a map, i.e... blowing up huge areas like bridges, skyscrapers, etc. in Battlefield then one set of calculated results could be used for all players...
