    A Summary of the Huge Wii Thread

    Did you bother reading your own links? When you do the math, (32 MB = half of 225 mm^2) you find that each 1 MB of eDRAM occupies 3.5 mm^2. So your evidence points to 15% of Hollywood's die being 3 MB of eDRAM.

    A Summary of the Huge Wii Thread

    I think this has become a new urban legend. For the same size a plasma screen will draw more power than an LCD, but not twice. Now, the plasma may draw twice as much power for the same price, seeing as you'll be getting a smaller LCD for the same amount of money. The same goes for plasma...

    3D is still displayed 2D so why bother with 3D?

    I was applying the concept to a near eye display. That'd be interesting though, to have each observer sporting just an eye tracker and looking at a TV screen. And even a small screen does fall out of focus quickly. If you're standing ten feet from a screen then your sharp vision will cover...

    3D is still displayed 2D so why bother with 3D?

    Hence, my idea to create an eye-tracking camera so that you only end up spending rendering resources on pixels that the observer is looking at and not on those in the periphery of their vision that are blurry anyhow.

    3D is still displayed 2D so why bother with 3D?

    I think the first thing you learn as a Mechanical Engineering undergrad is the ambiguity that arises from projection drawings of parts and how to avoid them. It usually takes years of experience to start making good drawings. Drawings that a machinist can pick up and read without using your...

    PS3 sales

    Sony is big, but not that big. They only have about 4 times the current assets of Nintendo (assets that can be converted into cash within a year). I doubt Sony would deem Nintendo valuable enough to raid 25% of their liquid assets just to acquire them.

    Why isn't TBDR used anymore ?

    I was actually a Kyro 2 owner back in the day. In fact, searching around on the internet for more information about the card was how I originally found B3D. It was pretty impressive what the chip could do with SDR SDRAM and a lower clock speed than the competition. Unfortunately PowerVR...

    Wii = ultra affordable?

    But affordable and overpriced are not antonyms. The Enzo is quite expensive, so it's definitely not affordable for most. Is it necessarily overpriced? Not really. But the semantics were all wrong. I don't think it's just early adopters picking up the Wii. I think its affordability has...

    Wii = ultra affordable?

    My favorite quote is this: Maybe that's why the Wii has been getting such hot press and Sony so much negative spin. The PSP vs DS is the new analogy of choice...

    Wii = ultra affordable?

    So $10 more for a controller is very expensive, but the same price increase for each game you buy is not? One of my brothers asked for a Wii for Christmas. I was considering getting the other a 360 until I thought about what I would have to spend so he could play a game on it. The $300 core...

    WiiGeePeeYou (Hollywood) what IS it ?

    Are you referring to the 7100GS? As pointed out, discounted clearance is not the same as retail. MSRP on a 7100GS is closer to $100 (for 128 MB). Using such a chip, as proposed, would also throw backwards compatibility out the window and would set development of dev kits back.

    Star Trek: Legacy

    Most likely it would. But the original intent of the Defiant was a fleet of smaller attack craft. So the question is, could the Enterprise E take two Defiants?

    Broadway specs

    What? Are you just making this crap up? If you were to take two processors with the same clock, same architecture, and they only differed in aluminum and copper interconnects you'd find they would have the exact same performance. Case in point, AMD's Athlon Thunderbird core was produced in...

    WiiGeePeeYou (Hollywood) what IS it ?

    We're constantly reminded that the peak polygon numbers that manufacturers throw out are for flat shaded polygons. Why not, then, make a game that uses lots of smaller polygons but is only black and white? Add what appears to be a grain filter, and you've got a very cinematic game that looks...

    Motorstorm screens

    The bushes or the cars? When I was playing the slightest collision with anything but another racer would cause my vehicle to burst into a thousand pieces.
