I was never pissed in the least (though I may have rolled my eyes a few times ;)). They had a clearly 2nd class architecture last year and did what they thought they had too to try and remain competitive in a cutthroat market.
I would have bought a 6800 this round but as chance would have it...
No rush to PCI-E for me. There will be at least one or 2 more high end AGP parts. So I'm sure I'll end up buying the last high end AGP part (probably around 12-15 months or so from now) and then riding that out for a year, year and a half. Then it'll be time for a pci-mb and video card.
obviously you CAN port an engine using D3D to other platforms, its just that if your primary API is opengl (and opengl is supported by your target platforms) obviously that port is going to be a WHOLE lot easier. Out of curiosity I wonder what the primary renderer is for the unreal engine on...
Lol. I suspect the primary reason John continues to develop in opengl (aside from comfort) is that id puts out versions of their games for both the linux platform and the macintosh platform. Direct3d would be problematic for both those platforms... :)
I dont even bother trying to keep up with 3dmarks 'acceptance' among the ati and nvidia camps. One week one group likes it and the other hates it and then the next week its flipflopped. It seems to change with the wind....
John hasnt updated his .plan in about a year. His most recent comments regarding Doom3 and its rendering paths (including the decision to drop the NV3x path) can be found in Reverends mini interview found on the front page of this site (which btw has no reference to any sort of 'dumbing down'...
I also would like to see where he said that or the basis for Hellbinders 'dumbing down the ARB2 path' comment. However I expect we will be left wanting...
Tough call. If I was spending someone elses money I'd pick up the X800XT PE. Spending my own money I see myself taking a good long hard look at that 6800GT. Perhaps ATI will release a lower clocked 16 pipe product to slide in between the Pro and XT PE. ;)
Given the X800Xt vs the 6800Ultra, I'm leaning towards the XT. Not all that interested in the Pro. The darkhorse in this for me is this rumored 6800 Pro/GT. Sliding in between the 6800 and the 6800Ultra, with the ultras full 16 pipes but slower clocks I'm VERY interested in seeing where its...
