AMD: Speculation, Rumors, and Discussion (Archive)

Did you actually read the article? 460 vs. 950: +16% in DOOM (Vulkan) -9% in DOOM (OGL) +36% in Hitman (DX12) +24% in Hitman (DX11) -2% in RotTR (DX12) -2% in RotTR (DX11) -11% in GTA V -21% in Crysis 3 +3% in The Witcher 3 Much bigger wins than losses and losing in DOOM OGL is pretty much...

AMD: Pirate Islands (R* 3** series) Speculation/Rumor Thread

If you bind the compressed resources with a graphics operation, you might be able to hack up a compute shader to grab any piece of memory mapped to the GPU, including metadata. Most video memory is not mapped to the CPU at all due to the existence of 32-bit OSes. Resizable BAR has been...

AMD: Pirate Islands (R* 3** series) Speculation/Rumor Thread

AMD can't catch a break. People complain that their reference coolers are too noisy then when they put a much quieter one on, then AMD still sucks. The amount of FUD and fearmongering in this thread is amazing. -FUDie

    NVIDIA Maxwell Speculation Thread

I don't know about Titan Black, but Titan can't maintain peak boost clocks for more than a minute or so with a heavy compute workload. If you enable fast doubles, the drop off is even more significant.

AMD: Volcanic Islands R1100/1200 (8***/9*** series) Speculation/ Rumour Thread

You're wrong. It's a logarithmic scale. 10dB = 10 deciBels = 1 Bel = 1 factor of 10. The difference from 10dB to 20dB is the same as 100 dB to 110 dB, i.e. 10x as much sound pressure in either case. If you want to know what is twice as much sound pressure, simply solve 10^x = 2. In...

AMD: Volcanic Islands R1100/1200 (8***/9*** series) Speculation/ Rumour Thread

A 10dB increase means 10x as much sound pressure but only about twice as loud to your ear. A 5dB difference is noticeable but not hugely so. See here. -FUDie

    NVIDIA Maxwell Speculation Thread

That's a quote from Jen-sun. What else do you expect him to say? Maxwell is going to suck relative to Kepler? -FUDie

    NVIDIA Kepler speculation thread

And you really think this is free for nvidia? How do you know it offsets costs at all? Say GK104 yields are terrible and you get a lot of salvage parts. Then selling a few for a premium does little to offset the costs. Or, say GK104 yields are great so that you get few salvage parts. Then...

    NVIDIA Kepler speculation thread

"Big" and "expensive" are relative terms. GK104 is 38% larger than Pitcairn. If nvidia is yielding that many salvage parts, then it seems that they would lose money since the manufacturing cost of GK104 is the same whether it's fully functional or not. -FUDie

    NVIDIA Kepler speculation thread

Really? It helps to measure integer performance, does it not? What about hashCat? Does that app not count either just because AMD's GPUs are so much better than nvidia's? Other test may stress different parts of the chip such as caches or float/double performance, but that doesn't make...

    NVIDIA Kepler speculation thread

Have you actually read the Bitcoin forums? GPUs are a far larger market than FPGAs simply because they are easier to setup and they are useful for other tasks. Yes, some FPGA solutions may be more efficient in perf/w but in most cases fast GPUs will pay off their investment faster as they are...

    Global warming

One of my best friends in high school was "diagnosed" with an IQ over 180. He went to an Ivy League school, majored in math and physics, eventually dropping physics because it was too much work carrying two majors. And then went on to grad school at a prestigious university... and had a...
