    Cell phone radiation

Basic physics allows one to safely reject the harmful cell phone radiation hypotheses. 1) The radiation isn't ionizing bc of quantum mechanics and the photoelectric effect. 2) The effect is at best thermal in origin on the outskirts of the skull. But that can't cause a problem. Sleeping on...

How long can you work 100 hour weeks before it get unhealthy

As a scientist, I don't know anyone in my field who works less than 60 hours a week on average. I do however start to notice a precipitous drop in productivity if I work more than 70, so its often a question of forcing yourself to go to sleep or to exercise etc. I'd argue the converse is...

    How environmental friendly are you?

That actually makes far more sense than people stressing about whether to recycle or which bulb to use. In fact, simply writing about whether to be more green on popular forums is more important than actually doing it individualy, as ideas can spread.

    How environmental friendly are you?

"I think you misunderstand his point. In any country where having a child is an easy choice to make (any 1st world country) it is a non-issue as the birth rate is in general lower than the death rate" I don't think you understand. No matter what the aggregate birth rate of a 1st world...

    How environmental friendly are you?

Eh? That makes no sense at all. Having children is an exponential contribution to carbon and really does become important. Their children contribute, and their childrens children and so forth. Further each generation that comes afterwards, will need that much more energy and carbon output...

    How environmental friendly are you?

The best answer is that the energy difference between using the 3 different methods is essentially nil. Safely negligable relative to the scientific uncertainty in the worlds energy requirements. For the most part, there is very few things you can actually do environmentally as an individual...

Why do modern day fighter pilots wear hard helmets?

Speaking from experience, b/c i've been up in one of those damn things before. It's for protection! You bounce around and hit everything in sight when the pilot decides to mess with you.

    Airbus A380 Mid-air Engine Failure

Obviously, but there is a stock design that most airlines follow. The other cool thing is (at least on the Air France flights) they stick a camera on the tail, so you see yourself take off. Its quite surreal!

    Airbus A380 Mid-air Engine Failure

Incidentally, the A380 is a beautiful airplane to be a passenger in. I took one this summer from NY to Paris, and it flies like a dream. Very smooth takeof and landing, lots of leg space and all sorts of cool amenities

Ipad can do anything a laptop can...... RANT

I personally think its great. Generally speaking, I *hate* laptops and rarely have used them in 20 years. The Ipad otoh is smaller and does everything that I would ever use a laptop for. As a researcher, its wonderful having all your textbooks/preprints in one place so that I can pull them...

    I hate dieting!

I started doing the sports nutrition thing recently as well for the hell of it. Its pretty addicting, and now I find myself going to the gym 4 times a week and eating healthy. I don't really have any goals, I am not doing this to lose or gain weight or to look pretty, or anything like that...

    Claimed P!=NP proof

It's hard to explain unfortunately, since a lot of it is speculation. But usually in mathematics, when a problem resists a proof for a long time, it nearly always means that it requires a new idea to solve, and that you won't get it by simply applying or fiddling with textbook knowledge or...

    Movie Reviews 2.0

Inception was A+. Not as good as the first Matrix, but up there. Its true that there was too much exposition, and a little too much action but then if there wasn't any of that, it would lose most of the public (and hell half of them probably already failed to understand what was going on)...

    I hate dieting!

I suggest starting to play a sport or activity that you enjoy (and can be social around) rather than going to the gym. Invariably people stop going to the gym, either through laziness, or having plateau'd in which case you gain all the weight back in a hurry. With a sport, it tends to be...

    Betelgeuse going supernovae

The wiki article is terrible, and the lhcfacts site is for crackpots.
