A Generational Leap in Graphics [2020] *Spawn*

No doubt it is a real time demo, but vertical slices don't have the code bloat full games have when producers request all these features, especially an open world game where many things outside of graphics can tank frame rate. And I have to repeat, let's see how well UE5 games run on lower end...

A Generational Leap in Graphics [2020] *Spawn*

I wouldn't judge the UE5 demo until we see a real game with AI, npc's, scripting, time of day, city environments, user camera control, simulated open world, etc. And let's see when it runs on lower end PC and/or PS4 to see how much is truly not possible without PS5/Series X. A lot of "what is...

A Generational Leap in Graphics [2020] *Spawn*

Yes sorry, BF4 and BF5. They both look like PS4 games, one earlier and one later.

A Generational Leap in Graphics [2020] *Spawn*

Battlefield is actually a good example. BF3 came out in 2013. BF4 in 2019. While you can see the improvements in BF4, they're both PS4 gen games clearly. Likewise if there is a Cyberpunk sequel in 2026, there's lots of room for improvement like shadowing and skins, but both will be clearly PS5...

A Generational Leap in Graphics [2020] *Spawn*

The RT difference is amazing. Saying 2077 is a next gen is somewhat subjective, but if people are expecting much better in a few years, they're gonna be disappointed if last gen is any indicator. Sure the most recent PS4 games look better than the best looking earlier ones such as Driveclub and...

Digital Foundry Article Technical Discussion [2020]

If anyone in DF sees this, I hope they do an NBA 2K21 gen comparison. After seeing the different PS4/PS5 and XBoxOne/SeriesX comparison videos (Miles Morales/AC/Watchdogs), most launch games will the same game across gens with RT and sliders turned way up. NBA isn't a DF staple, but it is the...

How has XBox One/PS4 held up at eol? Goodbye to gen 8.

As a generation ends, the deficiencies of the outgoing hardware become more apparent. For example, the CPU for Xbox One and PS4. Cyberpunk says hi. Or the small RAM in 360/PS3. What were some of the biggest bottlenecks that held back games in previous consoles generations toward their eol in...

Digital Foundry Article Technical Discussion [2020]

We should remember the DF video is comparing to a 6TF/12 GB machine. Versus OG Xbox One, Series X a big upgrade. The One X, its potato CPU notwithstanding, is still an amazing machine in its own right. These mid gen machines can skew our perspective of advancements.

    Third Party Software Exclusivity Practices

I find these morality takes on exclusivity strange. If Sony could buy Bethesda, they would. If MS could secure Spiderman exclusively, they would. If they could secure every 3rd party game, they would. It's just business for content holders in any industry. I wish people would understand this...

Current Generation Hardware Speculation with a Technical Spin [post GDC 2020] [XBSX, PS5]

The infinity cache is interesting. AMD chose 128MB regardless of the card so they are betting on this. It's a huge gambit on AMD's part. Anandtech estimates 128MB is 6 billion transistors. It feels like one of those things that could be a game changer but could also be scrapped in future...

How to sell next-gen consoles, Marketing, Positioning, and Pricing [2020]

They went from 5-6 studios to over 20 in the last 2-3 years. That is 4x. Yes, they could have asked teams to prioritize content for Series launch but it seems they are prioritizing getting content to Gamepass. Things are changing re: generations. In this console release cycle, we have two...

How to sell next-gen consoles, Marketing, Positioning, and Pricing [2020]

A lot of it is due to the timing of the acquired studios. They went from a handful to more than 20 stat. Going forward, they should have 5+ 1st party games per year on a staggered 3-4 year cycle. But if we're being real, a lot of people play sports games, GTA and COD on these machines anyway.

Microsoft acquires ZeniMax Media (Bethesda, id Software, Arkane + 5 more) [2020-09-21, 2021-03-09]

As a PC gamer, I'm relieved it's MS that bought them if anyone. They understand PC gaming culture better than Sony/Nintendo. But now they have to come through and show this is actually true by allowing full modding on Bethesda games, even ones that change binaries.
