Isn't this just a repeat of what happened in the 90s? And by that I mean at first the cpu did the calcs untill dedicated 3d grafix hardware came along. Now things seem to be going back to the cpu doing most of the heavy pulling.

When there are lots of building interior polys visible from outside and many players in view, Tribes2 brings my otherwise 400fps or higher down to 50 or so pretty regularly. This is with a e8500, 8800gts@600MHz core, 1024x768, 2xssaa, 16xaf. I blame the game engine.

Think light would be the best interface/bus though, using the different frequencies to address different parts. All interconnected by fibre.
