AMD: Pirate Islands (R* 3** series) Speculation/Rumor Thread

It seems like they've been testing this out for some time now. Some ancient news from SA.

AMD: Volcanic Islands R1100/1200 (8***/9*** series) Speculation/ Rumour Thread

Yup, I don't think anyone is that stupid to provide a cherrypicked sample for reviews that's this far off from retail cards' performance.

Yup, water and a bunch of fans @ 600 rpm

Let's hope we'll see such improvements in games as well.

I was just wondering. All the reviews I've seen (save for some compute stuff) concluded that PCIE3 made no difference with HD7970. But, wouldn't it play a role in CrossFire with limited number of lanes? I mean with both Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridget you only have 16 lanes (so 8 per card in...

Talking about rip-offs, in Poland cheapest 7970 (out of stock) retails for over 40% more than the cheapest GTX 580 (1.5 gig though). Those in stock are 60% more expensive.

They say at TPU that AMD might have cut the prices of HD 7970 to their partners. Would be great if it translated into lower prices towards end customers as well.

Yes, but that was not what I was referring to. I was just merely pointing out that those two cases are not equivalent. Not referring to whether you can see it or not.

It's not exactly the same, imo, as it means that you can see a microstutter because at some points the image stays longer than it should for a smooth experience. So it's not exactly equivalent to 35 fps.

You know that you can go all the way to the very bottom (IGP), not only 6970 ;)? 500 is a lot of money, but ultimately it's the market that will determine, if it's too much or not. Perhaps AMD is setting the price so high because of limited supply? Or perhaps they're just testing to see...

I've had the same problem in my Dell notebook. Turned out it was NIC (Intel) drivers ;). I'm not saying it's not AMD hardware causing it in your case, just saying you never really certain what's the cause of it. In my case, there was an nVidia chip inside.

But that's generally true though (perhaps without significantly). However, one should not base their purchase decision based on that, imo.

That's not what it says at TPU: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970/26.html Average powerdraw (while gaming) is 21W lower.

I'm hoping that the latter will not be true though...
