NPD December 2020

December 2020 NPD: Nintendo dominates with half of the top 20 games | VentureBeat

This is basically the Cyberpunk 2077 month. Will explain after the top 20 chart.
  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War Activision Blizzard (Corp)
  2. Cyberpunk 2077* Warner Bros. Interactive
  3. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla Ubisoft
  4. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Sony (Corp)
  5. Madden NFL 21 Electronic Arts
  6. Animal Crossing: New Horizons* Nintendo
  7. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe* Nintendo
  8. NBA 2K21* Take 2 Interactive (Corp)
  9. Immortals: Fenyx Rising Ubisoft
  10. Super Mario 3D All-Stars* Nintendo
  11. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate* Nintendo
  12. Just Dance 2021 Ubisoft
  13. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity* Nintendo
  14. FIFA 21 Electronic Arts
  15. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe* Nintendo
  16. Super Mario Odyssey* Nintendo
  17. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild* Nintendo
  18. Super Mario Party* Nintendo
  19. Ring Fit Adventure Nintendo
  20. Mortal Kombat 11 Warner Bros. Interactive
* Digital sales not included

Notice that asterisk (*). Digital sales for Cyberpunk 2077 are not included in the numbers. If they were, there's a pretty good chance it would have sold higher than COD.

“Cyberpunk 2077 debuted as the second best-selling game of December,” said Piscatella.

And it did that without CD Projekt Red sharing digital sales, which likely made up a significant portion of its total revenue.

Why is that even more relevant now than it usually is for Nintendo titles which also don't report digital sales?

Cyberpunk 2077 Reportedly Had the Biggest Digital Game Launch of All Time (ign.com)

Cyberpunk 2077 sold over 10.2 million digital copies, with PC accounting for around 80% of those sales.

So, while this is worldwide, in general ~half of total games sales for any given AAA title are sold in NA. It varies by title, of course. It's going to have a large impact on where Cyberpunk 2077 sales ranks.

On to the rest. Not unexpected, Nintendo is again the most prolific games publisher for December with 10 of the top 20 titles being Nintendo published games. Some of which are 3+ years old (Super Mario Odyssey, for example).

This doesn't contain the best sellers of 2020 (another post) or rolling 12 months, unfortunately. As usual, wish we had hardware numbers. I'm more interested in that for how well NSW sold than either of the new supply constrained consoles.

100% market saturation. They only make money now from online.

Well that can’t be far off the truth, can it? [emoji28]
