Coronavirus Pandemic (COVID-19) (SARS-CoV-2) [2020]

The last thing the US needs is the entire collapse of healthcare system because workers were early recipients of less stringently tested vaccine(s).

The last thing the US needs is the entire collapse of healthcare system because workers were early recipients of less stringently tested vaccine(s).

I agree but Fauci said recently he wouldn't have any problems distributing vaccines if there was "overwhelming" data during the Phase 3 trials of efficacy and safety.

So as long as he signs off on it, I would trust the action, though I don't trust Hahn at FDA.

Or maybe I just want to travel again and just hope there will be safe and effective vaccines soon.

Bill Gates recently gave an interview to The Economist in which he said he expects vaccines to have 80 to 85 or 85 to 90 percent effectiveness -- I can't recall if he said the first or second set of numbers. Hahn said vaccines must be at least 50% effective. Fauci had said he hoped for 75%.

So does Gates know something that Fauci doesn't know? He's not an expert in the field like Fauci but he's been involved with infectious disease and vaccine initiatives for years. So maybe he's been privy to some data that he's willing to talk about publicly while Fauci is holding back.

Dallas County virus threat level lowered

This is the first time I can remember it not being RED. That said ORANGE still states "Extreme Caution"

Dallas County officials on Wednesday for the first time since May lowered the color-coded corona virus threat level to orange after a sharp and sustained decrease in new COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations.

The nonbinding guide written by public health, epidemiology and infectious disease experts was first published in May as the state began to reopen the economy. Until Wednesday, the county has never lowered the perceived risk from its highest zone, red.

The move to orange means, according to the guide, that it is now safer to eat inside restaurants and attend movies — so long as social distancing guidelines and mask-wearing are enforced. Other activities such as working out in a gym and nonessential home repairs are still discouraged. People over 65 or in a high-risk group should still avoid in-person activities.

Dr. Philip Huang, the county’s health department director, in previewing the decision to lower the threat level said Tuesday at a Dallas County commissioners meeting that people must maintain the safety protocols that have led to the decrease in new cases.

“The universal masking, the closing of the bars, people still staying home, washing their hands, teleworking when they can, has made a difference,” he said, adding that easing up too fast could trigger another wave of infections.

Among the metrics Dallas County officials have used to make this decision include the number of new COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations. The threat level can be lowered when hospital and ICU admissions show a progressive daily decrease over more than 14 days and deaths from the virus also trend downward over that same time period.

The announcement comes on the eve of the long Labor Day weekend and as schools across North Texas begin meeting in person. Health experts and government officials have pointed to the Memorial Day weekend as the genesis for the state’s surge in cases this summer.

Gates knows stuff for sure. After watching his documentary, that man knows stuff but more importantly he knows how to build a team to get what he wants. He is the most well read person I can think of. I don't want to over commit my faith to him, but for sure Gates has inside knowledge of things as well.

German lawmakers urge shorter coronavirus quarantine

Politicians have backed recommendations by top virologist Christian Drosten for quarantine in suspected COVID-19 cluster cases to be reduced to five days. They hope the measure would then find greater social acceptance.

Lawmakers from across Germany's political spectrum are calling for a reduction in the quarantine period for suspected coronavirus cases to just five days.

The self-isolation time for people at risk of COVID-19 infection through cluster contact is currently 14 days.

Calls for a rethink come after leading virologist Christian Drosten — who has been credited with much of Germany's success in tracking and tracing the virus — recommended a shorter period. He said evidence suggested the virus would not be infectious five days after symptoms became apparent.

Emerging scientific evidence has made a rethink on the rules necessary, according to Karl Lauterbach, health spokesman for Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) — the junior coalition partner to Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives.

"If we limit the quarantine time to five days, social acceptance for the measure would be significantly higher," Lauterbach told German daily Die Welt.

"We know that the vast majority of people are no longer contagious five days after the start of symptoms, even if the PCR test is still showing a positive result," said Lauterbach, who is also a professor of health economics and epidemiology at the University of Cologne. The presence of the virus does not necessarily mean the patient is infectious.

Lauterbach added that such a change could initially appear difficult to justify. "But, if scientific knowledge makes a change in the measures seem sensible, you have to do it," he said.

EU warns against shortening COVID quarantine as cases in Europe spike

The European Union is warning governments not to reduce the 14-day quarantine for people infected with COVID-19 as some develop the infection even after two weeks, the head of the bloc's health agency said, signalling a new surge in cases in Europe.

Germany, the EU's largest country, informed EU authorities that it planned shortening the quarantine length, following similar moves by the Netherlands and Norway, minutes of a late-August meeting show.

"We are looking to provide some evidence to decision makers on what kind of risks they would take if quarantine was shorter," Andrea Ammon, head of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), told EU lawmakers in a regular hearing on Wednesday.

She cautioned that in 3-4% of cases, infections emerge only after 14 days, which is currently the standard length of the COVID-19 quarantine.

Last week, Germany decided that from October people returning from high-risk regions abroad will have to quarantine for five days.

The partial loosening of COVID-19 preventive measures comes as Europe is experiencing a new increase in cases.

"The virus has not been sleeping over the summer. It did not take vacation," Ammon told lawmakers.

She said this week's data showed that across Europe there were 46 cases per 100,000 people. "We are almost back to numbers that we have seen in March", Ammon said, referring to the beginning of the peak phase in Europe.

Bavaria's interior minister calls for consequences for superspreader
Garmisch-Partenkirchen records 37 new infections in one day. The county blames a 26-year-old for the Corona outbreak.

Following a violent Corona outbreak in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) is calling for consequences for the alleged perpetrator. "Should it be confirmed that the woman deliberately ignored the quarantine despite clear corona symptoms, she will face a heavy fine," Herrmann told the Munich Mercury.

"Such recklessness should be given a clear signal and a cautionary example that anyone who violates the rules and deliberately puts others at risk in this particular pandemic situation should be expected to face severe sanctions."

The district office assumes that the outbreak is due to a so-called superspreaderin. The 26-year-old is said to have moved through various pubs and bars in the market town at the foot of the Zugspitze, infecting several people.

According to the authority, she had already had symptoms on the pub tour and was waiting for the results of her Corona test. In Bavaria, a fine of 2000 euros can be imposed for breaches of quarantine requirements.

"The lady had symptoms, was with us at the test station and was asked to stay in quarantine due to the symptoms. But it did not do so," Stephan Scharf, spokesman for the district office, said on Saturday. The 26-year-old had just returned from a holiday in Greece.

It is not yet clear whether she contracted the virus on the trip or afterwards in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. "We don't know where she got infected," Scharf says. He corrected his previous claims that she was a tourist who had entered from the United States. There had been a 'transmission problem' within the authority.

"There are more cases where people don't wait for the test result," Scharf says. "And the nationality is basically also wurscht. But we wanted as many people as possible to come forward who remember having been in contact with the woman in a pub in the last few days."

Well I can add my parents to the list in Portugal unfortunately. Their case also highlights how irresponsible people are, regardless of age. They were in a house of friends of friends and got it there. The friends of friends knew they had someone there recently who was diagnosed with covid but didn't find it important to relay that information or not receive them at home. These are all 55+ aged people. My step mother is at home with only a cough so far but my father is in the hospital since he had a fever and was diagnosed with pneumonia. It was him who called me to tell and saying he is feeling better and not to worry. Hopefully everything will go for the best, but I'm raging at the irresponsibility.

Sorry to hear, hope everyone recovers. It's a shame that a simple bit of common courtesy could have prevented that.

The article pretty much states everything known to public so far. Except that this person is apparently a US citizen living in Germany, hence first the confusion that she might be a US tourist who just entered Germany.

Well, either way, I would judge her behavior as shyte, if all turns out to be true...

Doesnt steroid use result in an enlarged heart ?

However, the clinical finding here was the prevalence of myocarditis (presumably of viral origin), which in turn can _lead_ to enlargened heart. As can prolonged use of steroids in doping-related context if that is what you are referring to.

Pastor who prayed against mask mandate has COVID-19

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/pastor-who-prayed-against-mask-mandate-has-covid-19/ar-BB19aYSd

An Idaho pastor has been in intensive care for COVID-19 after previously calling himself a "no-masker" and criticizing widespread coronavirus safety precautions.

Pastor Paul Van Noy in late July prayed with his congregation at Candlelight Christian Fellowship that the City Council in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, would not pass a mask mandate, deeming himself a "no-masker."

Must be God's will then since praying didn't work

Hrm, imagine that, almost like clockwork, a few weeks after schools restarted there's surges in new cases. If only this could have been predicted. Oh right, it was.

As U.S. surpasses 200,000 COVID-19 deaths, Wisconsin sounds alarm over surges in cases

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers on Tuesday declared a new public health emergency and extended a face mask mandate into November to fight a coronavirus flareup in his state, as the number of people who have died across the United States since the pandemic began passed 200,000.

In-person social gatherings have led to cases in Wisconsin skyrocketing among people aged 18 to 24, Evers said, as he pleaded with students who returned to colleges for the fall semester to stay out of bars and wear masks.

“We are seeing an alarming increase in cases across our state, especially on campus,” the governor said in a statement announcing his decision.

The mask mandate, part of a second public health emergency the Democratic governor declared in late July, was due to expire on Monday. A conservative group is contesting the order in court, arguing Evers violated state law by using emergency powers more than once.

Wisconsin has experienced one of the highest percentage increases of coronavirus cases nationwide over the past two weeks, and has the second-highest rate of positive coronavirus tests in the nation at 17%, according to a Reuters tally.

The spike landed Wisconsin back on Chicago’s quarantine travel list, which requires people coming from the state to the city’s north to self-quarantine for 14 days.

...

The University of Washington’s health institute is forecasting coronavirus fatalities will reach 378,000 by the end of the year, with the daily death toll potentially skyrocketing to 3,000 per day in December.

Six out of every 10,000 residents in the United States has died from COVID-19, one of the highest rates among developed nations.
