Next Generation Hardware Speculation with a Technical Spin [pre E3 2019]

This is demonstrably not true.

The Magic Leap One has a heatsink and a fan.

Vive Pro has copper foil

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC+Vive+Pro+Teardown/106064

Oculus Go has heatsinking as well

In Vive Pro, ifixit suggests the copper foil actually doubles as EMI shield. And well.. it's a copper foil.

The Magic Leap and the Oculus Go are standalone headsets. This means they have their own high-performance mobile SoCs which need to do all the processing locally even for 3D games.
Why would you think the PSVR2 will have local processing in the same way as standalone headsets, if it's supposed to be used as an accessory to the PS5?

Why would this problem exist in the first place? HBM is currently cooled topside on graphics cards with 300W TDP. Do we think this solution is easier to accomplish than 2.5D interposer solution?
The implementation with an interposer is expensive and that's no secret. That's why there's been a lot of research on actual 3D stacking instead of 2.5D interposer solutions.

The Sony patents cover a breadth of topics from eye tracking, positional tracking using both visual and ultrasonic methods, environment object detecting and alerts, beamforming, and numerous other things which could require local processing. Moreover, who is to say the headset won’t have a local GPU for processing as a stand-alone option? As you can imagine, many of the patents mention the possibility of a local CPU/GPU combo.

From technical standpoint stand-alone psvr2 just sounds really unlikely. why would they do that, when it is just an add-on?

It would drive up the cost and technology at the moment cant offer much vs using console as source of calculations.

a) have psvr2 as similar, but better version of psvr1 with better resolution, games and so on with similar price
b) have psvr2 as similar to psvr1 but also usable as stand alone version that offers much lower quality of graphics than when connected to console and drive up the costs

While biggest problem is still nausea and getting sick from the games, which limits the group of possible customers. PSVR made me sicker than anything I have done in my life, I felt bit off for 1-2 weeks after using it for 3-4 days. Maybe there is no solution for that, but I hope that they will find one as otherwise VR as experience were really nice

Standalone headset could be portable console. Enabling connection to ps5 would allow for better graphics when used at home.

My guess is that oculus quest shows if there is market for portable vr console. Sony might do quest competitor if there is enough market for that to be worthwhile.

Gamepad party is over.

It's fake.

Look, as I've been saying since roughly March 2018 (in this very thread), next-gen is coming in 2020. That Semiaccurate article saying 2018 (lol) got people's hopes up for 2019, but by now I hope it's clear that the PS5 ain't coming out this fall.

And, despite all the rumors about devkits being out (usually from rumormongers who are wrong more often than not), the number of people briefed on next-gen is still very limited. Even within companies like, say, DICE, there'll be a small team of engineers who now have a rough idea of specs, and everyone else will know when they need to know. Not a lot of devs are disclosed on next-gen right now.

In other words, don't expect much in the way of substantial leakage just yet. The only thing to know for sure is that both Sony and Microsoft are aiming higher than that "10.7 teraflops" number that Google threw out last week. (And, as has been reported, Microsoft's got a few things in the works.)

Thats very good info (rumors about 8tflops were underwhelming).

Oh, God, please, yes, let this man be right.

So we can assume that minimum ps5 spec is 11tf, ryzen 8 core, 16 gb ram (12 for games, 4 for system)

It reads like pure speculation. As if google being 10.7 supposedly means the others have no choice but trying to beat this number.

I stay at 10TF and 16GB gddr6 for my prediction.

Maybe 24GB. I don't know.

Anyway, I don't know for sure what next-gen specs will look like. I have no idea how many teraflops there'll be. A dev recently told me that a lot of people within studios are just making assumptions based on limited information, and that one of the assumptions is that everything's going to be twice as powerful.
Remember even studio's assumptions/guesses can be pretty wrong. That's why things like the AC games performed so badly as they made some guesses about performance during development, and that wasn't the only one.
