The Epic Games store for PC and Mac [2018-12]

They had an example to work from. Just involve someone over the age of 18 with a little experience in the history of Steam in the design and you won't end up with an architecture which can't even support offline play. Basically involve even a single fucking gamer.

Doing it wrong the first time didn't really save them time ... it just ensured a messy transition to doing it right (for instance the save games).

That's the BMNVP* industry standard's Below Minimun Neraly Not Viable Product*.

*Actually not viable.

I don't need something as overloaded as Steam (with many social features etc.). Since the epic Store is slimmer it is supposed to start faster.

I prefer the basic philosophy and stricter approach of Uplay where not so many (pure) trash games are to be found and where I only see big titles like The Division etc. on the homepage. These small Indie games do not interest me personally.

As long as I don't pay a subscription I don't care how many stores I need to install. Personally, I don't understand why there's such a fuss about the Epic launcher for Metro 2033. I wouldn't get too angry about something little like that. Some prefer to wait one year to get it on Steam although they would like to play it now.

That's like saying MS Paint is better than Photoshop because it starts faster.

The controversy against the Epic store doesn't really have anything to do with being another launcher.

Right, the controversy is elsewhere. But some have said its a nonstarter because its yet another launcher, and they cant be bothered to do anything different.

You don’t want anime titty games always showing in your recommended list even though you have no porn or anime games in your library? What is wrong with you?

The actual store part of steam is utter garbage now. The anime titties are actually a welcome sight compared to the other shit they defecate all over my rec lists. It’s like gaben sat down one day and said how can we completely buttfuck our platform.

Hell, it was maybe still is missing a very basic feature of being able to check what version of the game is on the store. That was important for the person playing Steam as his followers let him know that Metro released a patch that was supposed to fix some of the save issues. He went to the Epic store to check for the game version...and nada.

It's not just streamlined, it doesn't even have the most basic features that you should have as a content delivery platform.

GoG is fairly basic compared to Steam, but it shits all over the Epic storefront. And it's getting better all the time.

Hell, even the Windows Store is better than the Epic client. Ugh.

Stop spending money on buying exclusivity and make a functional delivery platform. Or at the very least don't be worse than the Windows Store.

Some random interrelated things to the Epic storefront.

https://segmentnext.com/2019/02/26/metro-exodus-positive-reviews/

Because Epic can't be arsed to let purchasers of games on their storefront inform future purchasers of games on their storefront on whether they though the game was good or bad, people are instead leaving reviews on Steam. Good on the players. Bad on Epic.

Granted you can make an argument that it prevents review bombing, trolling, or hiring people to leave good reviews. OTOH - there's no feedback mechanism for games.

They claim they are looking into ways to implement some mechanism to show some kind of user feedback, but here's to guessing it won't be actual user comments or user ratings. Easier to push games to people if they don't know if it's good or not (larger games will have reviews online, but smaller games are less likely to). Hell, even the Windows Store has user comments and user ratings.

Review bombing, of course, can be serious. Devotion, a Taiwanese game, was recently taken down on Steam due to massive review bombing by the Chinese that found a Winnie the Pooh meme in the game. For those that don't know, President Xi Jinping has been on a crusade to eradicate the existence of Winnie the Pooh memes in China.

https://www.businessinsider.com/winnie-the-pooh-memes-china-censored-xi-jinping-2018-2

But, because of this, I actually discovered that Steam has implemented a nice way to see a review bomb graphically.

Code:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/555220/Detention/#app_reviews_hash

Had to put it in a code window as the forum was converting the link to a generic Steam link to the purchase page of the game.

Can't link to the Devotion game by the same developers but that's the review graph for their previous game that also suffered a massive Chinese review bomb. And boy is it massive. Prior to that the game had almost universally good reviews.

And finally, Kudos to CDProjeckt Red who were very quick to come out and state there will be no exclusivity for Cyperpunk 2077 either on GoG or the Epic storefront after rumors started floating around that Epic had signed an exclusivity deal for that game.

https://segmentnext.com/2019/02/26/cyberpunk-2077-to-gog-let-alone-epic-games-cd-projekt-red/

Although I'm very saddened to hear that the GoG storefront is struggling. I've liked the progress they've made with their completely optional launcher (don't need it run games purchases on GoG since they are DRM free) and the features they've implemented in it and planned to implement into it.

IMO, CDProjeckt Red is one of the best outfits out there, and they always think of their customers first. Wish all developers, publishers, and IP holders did that.

A post on GamesPlanet reveals that sales of Tom Clancy's The Division 2 will be restricted to Uplay and the Epic Games Store following the game's launch next week (thanks MP1ST). They reassure their customers that existing orders will be fulfilled, but that after March 15th, they and other third-party stores will no longer be distributing the game:
Hey Community!

Sadly we have to announce you that Ubisoft will not allow digital third party stores, such as Gamesplanet, to sell Division 2 after its release on March 15th 2019. After this date, the game will digitally only be available through Ubisoft's Store and another exclusive digital store. This will also be true for all upcoming game content such as Season Pass, Extensions, etc.

Take the opportunity to buy at Gamesplanet until March 15th 2019 and make use of the paysafecard promotion as this will be available until the game will be pulled from our stores.

We won't be able to solve some support requests (e.g. key activated on the wrong Ubisoft account) after March 15th, as we won't have any more keys to exchange/swap. Please address your support requests to Ubisoft directly for such cases.

Worry not, all purchases that have been completed on Gamesplanet will be honoured. This is also true for gifts, no matter if these have been picked up or not.

Obviously, we are not happy about this decision.

The Gamesplanet Team

There's signs of progress on their store, as they now have a Search feature.

That comes across as Epic going...

"Wait, what? Are you telling me that if we want to sell games that we need to give people a way to find a game on our client? Seriously? Well crap, I guess we should put a search function in? Think that will work?"

Millions of USD to secure exclusivity on PC. 10's of USD to make the store client. Epic, you have your priorities, back asswards.

Well to be fair, if they only had 4 games total and all shown on the first page there's no need for search.

Yeah that's what I was thinking afterwards... search probably wasn't a priority at the start.

Sure that's valid. But at the point they decided to spend millions of USD to secure titles to start their own game storefront...someone should have mentioned the need to have an actual usable storefront with at least the basics any modern storefront should have.

It just reeks of greed and incompetence.

Outer Worlds, Control, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, Afterparty, The Cycle, Dauntless, Industries of Titan, Jorney to the Savage Planet, Kine, Phoenix Planet, The Sinking City, Spellbreak, Soul As, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human will release on the Epic Game Store.

Epic seems not to pay a fixed sum but guarantees a minimum turnover at a certain point in time. This would mean that the developers should at least get the amount of money which they hoped for when selling on Steam. Even if the sales figures are disappointing. If the game sales are better then the developer will get more money. For a developer this is a good deal.
