I finally got a Wii! And my first PS3 game to boot!

I'd suggest playing through what you have now. No sense in building up a huge stockpile of games now when they could be discounted by the time you actually have time to play something new!

Some games I have to get now because they're not in circulation much anymore. Take Zack and Wiki. I was barely able to find that game.

Don't overlook the PSN store, whatever you do! There are lots of downloadable demos to try before you buy, and plenty of great games not sold on blu-ray that can only be downloaded from the PSN store. Super Stardust comes to mind (my roomie and I can't get enough of this game, especially the co-op mode). Everyday Shooter and Blast Factor are different takes on the same game type as Super Stardust (you're in a ship of some kind, using the analog sticks to fly around and blast stuff). Pixeljunk Monsters is a lot of fun if you like tower defense games. The Last Guy is a good one too, I can't really explain this one, just try the demo.

I've seen from the available selections that I'd probably play a few PS1 games from the PSN store. But I think overall I'm probably going to spend most of my time in the Wii Virtual Console store.

If you like racing games, I'd suggest you pickup Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (download or Blu-ray). Dirt and Grid are also lots of fun, although not as realistic as GT5P.

I'm a big racing fan, but I don't like floaty controls at all. How do the games you've mentioned control?

Army of Two is a fun shooter if you enjoy issuing commands for your AI teammate (not as in-depth as something like GRAW, but adds a tactical feel to the game), or better yet, have a friend to play through with in co-op mode. I enjoyed Uncharted and Lost Planet immensely, the former being a "must-buy" for the system, the latter is a great value title @ only $30. GTA4 is fun if you like sandbox games or are a fan of the franchise.

The games patsu mentioned are good choices as well.

Hmm, I can't really play FPS without a keyboard and mouse. hehe. Any attachments for the PS3 for these kinds of games?

I'd love to hear your impressions of Zack and Wiki. I nearly picked up a Wii just for that one alone.

I notice you haven't got RE4, though you may have played than on another platform. Also keep an eye out on De Blob, due out in September. A friend of mine is one of the leads on it, and the initial (unpublished/pre-release) reviews its getting look very positive. General impressions have also been very strong.

No wonder I couldn't find De Blob. hehe. Yea, I have RE4 on the Gamecube, didn't feel like purchasing it again.

Zack and Wiki is my next game after Mario Galaxy, so I'll let you know as soon as I tear into it. I'm really looking forward to it especially since many of the user reviews on sites like Amazon were pissed that it was so hard. They downrated it because of that.

Well screw them, that sounds great to me :D

Ratchet and Clank, good one!

What about racing games in the mold of Wipeout or Extreme G3? I'm a huge racing game whore, but I don't like floaty controls.

Wipeout HD's not out yet, though I've heard something about it being out next month. It's a PSN game, though. There's also Burnout Paradise, it's an arcadish racer/crash-porn venue, but I don't think the controls would be 'floaty'. And I think you can get it cheap, nowadays.

Gran Turismo certainly doesn't have 'floaty' controls. It's a pretty hardcore racing sim, if you don't mind the game's view on crashes (a.k.a. they shouldn't ever happen, so modeling car damage is unnecessary).

I told you in Aim convos before , buy a 360 :)

Resistance was fun , I also played uncharted which was good. You can find both used on ebay for as low as $15 bucks

If the 360 had a Bluray drive I'd have bought that instead of a PS3. From what I've seen the 360 has a superior gaming library anyway. At least for now.

Natoma, I'd b more easy if you told us what kind of games you like. But I'll try to do some guessing here, anyway. :p Judging from your Wii games list, you seem to prefer action-adventure and jump 'n runs games.

So for PS3, I'd recommend Uncharted (It will look very fine on your Plasma) and Ratchet and Clank. Both are available as demos on the PSN, so you can check, if you like them. If you're into beat 'em ups, you can't pass on Virtua Fighter 5, BTW :D
If you like racers, check out GT Prologue (I imagine that will also look pretty nice on Plasma).

Apart from that, I was wondering which PS3 SKU you own. If you have a BC model, there're quite a few old PS2 titles to check out, if you haven't played them yet. Ico or Shadow of the Colossus might be right down your alley, IMO. Same is true, if you missed out on GC titles. e.g. Zelda: Windwaker, etc.

Action/Adventure Run N' Jump games (as you were able to tell)
Racing Games (Wipeout, Extreme G3, F-Zero mold)
Flight Games (Star Wars Rogue Squadron, for example)
RPGs (My favorite was Dragon Warrior series)
Puzzle games (hence Zack and Wiki)

Those are typically the games I play all the time. I have about 20 GC titles. :)

That said, I have the 40GB model. I bought it in March for $399

Dirt and Grid are the epitome of floaty controls. See if you can download Burnout: Paradise demo. It's a good mix of sim and arcade.

As for FPS, 2 playthoughs of a FPS campaign will develop the muscle memory you need to play FPS with a controller.

I'll give Wipeout HD a try when it comes out. Any demos for GT that I can give a try first before buying?

I can get that in the PSN store right?

Ugh, no. Just, no. No FPS on a controller.

The only FPS that I've seen that does justice on console is the Wii FPS like Metroid Prime 3, which I picked up. Or MOH, etc. No FPS on controllers. There should be a ban symbol or something.

Pixel Junk Eden and MGS4 are my most favorite games on the platform thus far.

If you like BoomBlox and Elebits etc., I recommend Pixel Junk Monsters off PSN, which can be played coop and is both gentle and taxing. Of course LBP is a no brainer when it comes out ;)

I've been looking at photos for Pixel Junk Eden, but I honestly still can't tell what kind of game this is.

As for the MGS series, I've never played any of the games. Never been big on the stealth genre.

Btw, when is Little Big Planet due?

I have all three consoles and here are my ps3 comments:
best sports game: MLB08 The Show
best overall game: MGS4
best short game: Heavenly sword

Comments on others:
Ratchet and Clank - 9 year old loved it. I never got into it.
Uncharted - great looking, got bored
RFOM - great game and story but ending a bit to cliche in difficulty absurdity

We have Soul Calibur IV, so I doubt we'll get another fighting game. Soul Calibur is the only series my husband likes playing. :)

Ratchet and Clank I'm going to give a try in the PSN store.

Uncharted, tried it but didn't like the control scheme or demo much at all.

RFOM?

It's a 2d platformer, but with a much more vertical bent. As in, you don't really go left-to-right, but rather try and climb the level.

Wii:
My list used to be similar to yours so no suggestions

PS3:
High Velocity Bowling (if only for comparisons sake, but we prefer it to Wii Bowling)
Pixel Junk Eden
Super Stardust HD

Maybe MGS4 if that is your style of game (I'm having difficulty enjoying it)
Uncharted, Ratchet, Heavenly Sword are fun but if you have gone this long with just watching movies, you can probably just continue to do so and get good value out of the PS3.

A shooter? Wow, I thought those were a dead breed,. That's why I didn't list the genre above. Looks kind of funky. Is everything limited to the globes, or does it also do the classic sidescrolling/topdown scrolling of shooters past?

Resistance: Fall of Man. There's a sequel coming out this year.

Heavenly Sword isn't a fighting game, it's an action game, more along the lines of God of War. Metal Gear Solid is... er, Tactical Espionage Action. It's a stealth game, more akin to Splinter Cell (though also very different). It's sort of a mix between Splinter Cell and Hitman: Blood Money -- stealth isn't costume-based, but you can blast your way out of most stealth situations if you get sick of it. If you can live with often cool, often long-winded cut-scenes it's a pretty good game. But it's got shooterish elements, so that means controlling a reticle with the analog sticks, which may not be acceptable.

Er, I'm not sure what series you're familiar with, no idea if you know God of War. It's sorta like Devil May Cry, too, and also sorta like the Ninja Gaiden Xbox reboots, though it's much closer to GoW.

There's plenty of those filtering in via PSN or even the Wii's VC (you might want to check that out too, for some really old-school 'classics'). SSD is globe-based. Everyday Shooter is another really good choice, even if it's much weirder. But they're both games in which you're constrained. I think there's a 1942 remake demo up on PSN, which is the top-down style, but otherwise this gen hasn't been too rich in shooters, especially Sony-side. There's a handful of decent/good shooters (an Ikaruga port, for instance, though you may have that on GC) on XBLA, but that's probably not much help to you.

Jesus Christ this is the fastest moving thread I've ever seen on these forums.

@Natoma: Only "globes"/planets. But it's pretty unique in it. I am fairly certain there is a demo, but it's definitely worth the low price of admission. It's not what I would call a shooter...it's more like a free roaming space invaders. A shooter to me is Resistance, Wolf of the Battlefield or even BCR. You know, a game in which you run around with a gun in your hand.

Ahh, FPS. Beh. Kills FPS on console. Keyboard/Mouse only forever. :)

Ahh, ok. From the commercials it looked like Heavenly Sword was a pretty fighter, nothing more.

Haven't played God of War. Did play DMC demo on PS3, was 'meh' about it.

But no new standalone games that is. Nothing like Nanostray on the DS?

You were born during the N64 era weren't you. :)

Shooters before FPS came out were games like Gradius, Axelay, Thunderforce, etc. hehe.

Anywho, it kind of reminds me of Tempest 2000. Lots of powerups and psychedelic weapons. Think I'll give it a try.
