You are probably confusing super-tiling and scissors. Scissors mode splits the frame horizontaly or verticaly in two parts, which can be different in size. Super-tiling splits the frame in chess-board style.

At first I was like you, but now that I see all 5870 offers, it cant be anything but 399 really.

If 5870 was meant to be ~50% faster than 4870/90, 299 would be fine. But now we see it's a solid doubling of functional units, with a fast clock too so it's not giving away anything there. As high as stock 4890 out of the gate! Combine that with the supposed power consumption.

I mean it supposed to compete with 4870X2 and GTX295 on performance, so couldn't you look at it as making things actually cheaper (since it's cheaper than those)?

The way i see it, technology advancements (especially in gpu world) are supposed to bring double performance at the same price range.

The 4870 reached 250% of 3870 and it cost 250 euros while thw 3870 cost 100euros.

The 5870 seems to repeat that and since the 4870 already costs 100euros i don't see the reason why the 5870 should cost more than 250 euros!

The 4850 already costs 75 euros and i also don't see the reason why the 5850 should cost more than 150 euros!

Last year, the 4850 was 100 euros cheaper at launch day than the 9800GTX, so i don't see why the 5850 shouldn't cost 100 euros less than the GTX 285, since it seems that it will perform the same!

I'm sorry, but the way i see it, ATI is starting Nvidia's blood sucking strategies and please don't tell me it's just business, cause it's not!

Business is when you launch the 4850 at 150euros and you should do the same for the 5850!

I've read that ATI's goal is to reach 50% market share during 2009-2010 and they will not succeed in doing that if the prices are not 199,299,499USD for the 5850,5870,5870X2. The most i would accept is 250,350,550USD and that alone because the chip is a bit larger than the rv770 and the 5850 will not use cheap ddr3 any more (i think).

A new product is supposed to make the firm as much money as possible. So if you have the only DX11 card and the fastest card on the market, then you are not selling cheap.
 
save some money on other things you dont need.
simple as that.
None is forcing you to buy stuff.

I must plan for getting 2 more lcd screens.
not just a videocard ;)

The big question is - was Fuad right after all, and the card is 60% faster than last gen? When compared to X2/GTX295, not single chip models like everyone assumed?

I did read the numbers as equal 5870=4890 in crossfire with Minimum fps being about the same.
 
I'm a little dissapointed they went back to huge chip design and eat they tounge out after they swear on no huge chip designs policy in future and competing for performance crown.

I think the idea is to introduce shrinks of 58xx on 32 nm node which will later on allow them to drop prices. That's why they went with a somewhat larger die size this time around. 32 nm should be around some time in march-april 2010, ideal for introducing optical shrinks. Remember that they introduce a refresh about every 6 months or so.

r600, early 2007 (new)
r670, late 2007 (a shrink)
r770, mid 2008 (new)
r790/r740 (some what delayed) early 2009 (shrink+refresh)
r8xx, mid-late 2009 (new)

so

32 nm parts, early 2010 (shrink/refresh) sound reasonable to me.

Plus, I'd bet on a 5830 (a salvage part) appearing sometime later which has 14/16 simd's.

Exactly. Plus it seems actually priced fairly reasonable to me. GTX 8800 was like 600 USD at launch, the ultra even way more - simply because there was no competition. Sure it obliterated everything else, but so should rv870 (ok maybe not against dual chip cards all the time). In contrast to that these are still priced to sell at some volume, and even the most rabid nvidia fanboy would have to admit a 5850 is much better value than a GTX 285 at current prices (of course, that may change).
Also it's way worse with cpus, intel sells 1000$ boutique parts which cost the same 50$ to make as the 200$ parts, with like 20% more performance... THAT is what I call bad value.
 

I was wondering how they'd do 6 monitors, if I read that right this will only be possible with Hemlock which of course uses 2 rv870 and hence has twice the display outputs (kinda like the sapphire HD4850X2 which also had 4 outputs though driver didn't allow you to use that as combined display for gaming), in contrast to the HD4870X2 which got "stripped" of two of its outputs. That'll make for a crowded backplate only doable with display port outputs?
