Geforce 9600 GSO

Ok, my system is old. I can't afford to do a full upgrade right now( well not really a full upgrade, but the cpu, mainboard, memory and maybe the power supply). However, it seems for now I can at least get a new video card. I've been looking at mostly the 8600GT line of cards, but I also came across the Geforce 9600GSO [made by Galaxy] with a similar price...so I now I have a dilemma. Another concern I have would be whether my system is good enough for these cards

my current specs are:
P4 3.2Ghz
Asus P5RD1-V main board
2GB DDR400 RAm
Enermax 460W power supply
3 HDD's: 80GB(main/IDE), 200 SATA and 160 SATA

What would you guys recommended?

I'm pretty sure the 9600gso is faster than any of the 8600's, I don't think your system would be holding back all that much. It should be priced in the $100 range.

Depending on how much that 9600GSO is priced, you may want to look at a 8800GT for $123 after $30 Rebate, if you can order from NewEgg.

Thanks guys. The nearest computer shop is selling a 9600GSO for $129.99(Canadian) and a 9600GT(512MB) for for $149.99. So now I'm leaning a little more towards the GT. I going to check out this week.

9600GSO is a rebranded 8800GS. At lower resolutions it actually beats 9600GT.
9600GSO has 96 shader processors vs 64 in 9600GT. However 9600GT has a larger memory (512mb in GT compared to 384mb) as well as larger memory bandwidth (256-bit interface in GT vs 192 bit interface). I personally have a 8800GS, I have overclocked the memory clock to 900MHz and it works pretty well. The lower memory bandwidth and lower onboard memory seems to limit the card at higher resolutions but at lower resolutions (lets say 1280*1024) it works great.

Even better. Thanks...

Also, is my power supply good enough? or is that going to be a problem?
The 9600GT and even 3850 cards require something between 400 and 450 watts minimum.

Your power supply will be fine. Those video cards are using less than 100watts peak. Your whole system probably won't pull much more than 250 peak.

I see, thanks. I guess I should've mention that me power supply is about 3 years old now(as with my main board) its made by Enermax. I am still considering getting a new one in the 500-550 Watt range.

It's a HP Media PC I got real cheap. The model number is m7664x. I'm giving you this because I don't know the specifics of each part in the computer other than what's written there.

Athlon 64X2 4200+
2 GB RAM
300 GB HDD
DVD RW +/- and crap

PSU: Brand Hipro

DC Output: +5v=/25A, +3.3v=/18A, +5VSB=/2A, +12V=/19A, -12V=/0.8A

+5V and 3.3v Shall Not Exceed 175W

+5V and +12V Shall Not Exceed 268W

Max Power Output 300W

Crysis runs really well (with mods online) for hours until I hit the alien ice stage. I think the ice rapes everyone's (or those of us with weaker setup) rig pretty badly anyway.

Thank you guys for all your feed back. As I was doing my research, I really started to re consider the video card and just save up the money and get a new cpu/motherboard. I see there are core 2's and AMD cpu'd under $200 and mother boards sub $150. Seeing how my system is old P4, it would be better if I go that route and get a nice video card after.....
