Default The good old days.

For any of the young'un's on this forum that want to know what it was like in the industry years ago, check this out. Its a long article, but if you have the patience, its a good read.
http://www.gamespot.com/features/3d/index.html

I still remember the day I saw Lara Croft running around, in full bi-linear filtered glory on the voodoo1.

Another one for me was seeing Unreal for the first time (in glide), that fly by demo was awesome. Till this day, I still haven't seen anything that has opened my eyes as much as Unreal did. Who could forget the first time you walk in to an outdoor environmnet, seeing the detailed sky, water, flying creatures and the massive terrain etc... Not saying that there aren't better looking games today, just saying that for its time, it was years ahead.

After seeing the gameplay footage of DoomIII, I think that game will finally topple Unreal for me.

My biggest eye opener was when Quake 1 came out, and I fired it up for the first time after trying to play it on a 486, it said it couldn't start because it needed a floating processor unit, so I upgraded to a P100, then was able to get Quake 1 to start. To see a truly 3D world for the first time was awesome, and that experience was mimicked when I first saw GLQuake running. I miss those days, it's not often you get a game these days that opens your eyes like that.

Same for me, I should have added GLQuake before. That was awesome, with gameplay to match!

I am sure DoomIII will be a huge eye opener, well atleats I am hoping.

Actually now that I think about it, seeing GT3 on the PS2 for the first time REALLY impressed me.

I remember the first time I fired up Quake1 on my Virge....After figuring out how to enable OpenGL, I couldn't believe how awesome it looked, in comparison to the 'normal' rendering...

Of course, I was also scratching my head trying to understand how the thing was rendering like 1 FPS (I swear, it was much less than that)....But once I saw what it looked like in OpenGL, I went right out and bought my Voodoo1...and the rest, as they say, was history.

Doom/GL Quake/Unreal were huge improvements that were really amazing. Since then, it doesn't really seem that any major strides have been made.

The first game I ever played on the PC was Castle Wolfenstein (not 3d) . My favorite game of all time? Master Of Orion (can't wait for 3 ) .

I second that.

I think Doom 3 will be the next game to show us another visual leap in quality.

The improvement in physics model in games is also making quite an impression on me. The ragdoll physics for UT2003 looks quite impressive.

AFAIK i486 already had an integrated FPU, i386 (or i286, not so sure about this) was intels last implementation without one.

486's with broken FPUs were sold as 486SX's. The motherboards generally had a socket for the FPU, which was really a 486DX. The second CPU would disable the first.

There is no question that this card, along with the Orchid Righteous 3D, is absolutely the best 3-D game card on the market today.

3Dfx really did trounce the competition with the Voodoo didn't they..

Back, then I wasn't so tech-savvy, so I'm not sure what exactly I had back then. I just remember clearly the great disappointment when Quake 1 said something about needing a FPU. I asked my friend's dad who worked in the Navy, and he said if I upgraded to the latest Intel Pentium processor, that it would solve that problem.

The one moment that blew me away was turning up at a friends house and seeing the Wild Copper demo running on an Amiga 500. Made going back to my CGA based PC a real downer

After that it was Commanche on a Paradise based 386-40MHz and then Unreal on a K6 with two Voodoo2's in SLI mode.

Now nothing seems too amazing anymore. I weep for my lost innocence

I think Doom on my 486DX 33, then Need for Speed on the 3DO, next was GranTurismo on the PS. The next big jump was Unreal on P2 400 with SLi voodoo2, quake2 was too bland. And i never enjoyed HalfLife cause it came out after unreal and looked so PANTS in comparison. The last thing was GT3 on PS2. Eagerly anticipating Doom
