May 30, 2012 (London, UK) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced that DOOM® 3 BFG Edition will be available this Autumn and features DOOM® 3 and the Resurrection of Evil® add-on pack, both of which have been completely re-mastered. The package also includes hours of new content – seven new levels entitled ‘The Lost Mission’. DOOM 3 BFG Edition is slated for release for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PC and PlayStation® 3 – making it the first time any DOOM game has ever appeared on the PlayStation 3.

Re-mastered for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, this genre defining game and its add-on pack offers greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece. Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, ‘The Lost Mission’ featuring seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have them on the edge of their seats.

DOOM 3, Resurrection of Evil, and ‘The Lost Mission’have been optimized in 3D, featuring 5.1 surround sound, Xbox 360 Achievements, PlayStation 3 trophies, improved rendering and lighting, and a new check point save system allowing for smoother progression through the game. id® Software has fine-tuned the controls to bring the intensity of the DOOM single and multiplayer experience to the consoles, and DOOM 3 now features the new armour-mounted flashlight, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time.

“DOOM 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release,” said John Carmack, Technical Director at id Software. “Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls. New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.”

As a special bonus, DOOM 3 BFG Edition will also include the original DOOM® and DOOM® 2 games, making it the definitive collection of the revolutionary games developed by id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre.

The desktop graphics cards the consoles are based on have no problems blasting Doom 3 on Ultra at 1920x1200 with 4xMSAA @ 40fps+ so there should be no excuse really for not atleast rendering these games at native 1920x1080 @ 30fps with or without MSAA.

Sounds interesting but these two points put me off:

Sounds like the game might be slowed down/simplified for use with controllers and I liked the requirement to swap between torch and gun, it added tension.

Improved graphics sounds nice though, I might be interested in a second play through if it hits a bargain bin price.

If you watch the trailer for this so called 'Enhanced' version it's 100% identical to the PC version.

Yep. From the video it doesn't even seem to have shadow buffers which JC had working at one point in DOOM 3 (post release, as research for their next game - Darkness which ended up being cancelled).

If you want an enhanced version with better textures, models, post-processing effects, "hdr" and so on google for Sikkmod:

The only thing that's barely holding my attention is the extra mission. Like pjbliverpool I liked having to switch to the torch, much more hectic.

I wouldn't mind too much if this was the Vicarious Visions version of the campaign along with the online co-op version but now with the PC quality textures and shadow-casting flashlight. Then again, the time between level loads would be quite jarring in this day and age.

No real point to this if it's just a PC port. :/

One nice little addition/change that was made late in the game:

In case you have a shoddy memory, I'm referring to the extended hallway with the ghost apparition . It was one of the nicer changes.

Not a fan of Doom 3, but why does id continues to omit Final Doom into the package?

I sure hope Doom 1 is actually Ultimate Doom. Makes the extras even less desirable if it's not.

Hm, I was hoping for something close to that sikkmod with the new improvements. Don't think I'll be getting this one though.

2 doors, one keycard.

Run to other side of building to get other keycard. Come back and open door 2.

Enter door 2 only to find 2 more doors and 1 keycard.

Brilliant level design.

I LOVED DOOM 3 and its flashlight or gun mechanic ! but , yes, SikkMod is the way to go if u want to re-play it. I had wished they would bring HDR into this new version, but seems like they haven't. HDR + Parallax mapping and I would have bought this bundle asap.

I never knew the flashlight or gun mechanic was so popular. I had the idea that it was hated by most people hence the popularity of duct tape mod and it was only introduced in the game because of the framerate hit it took otherwise.

I hope doom 1 and 2 include a huge midi soundfont, i.e. a 180MB one to take PS3 memory limitations in account.

Interestingly, looking at the trailer cold, I thought "this looks reasonably on par with current gen console stuff". Sure it wouldn't win any looker awards, but to me it looks fairly current gen at a glance.

Then I realized Doom 3 PC came out in late 2004, only one year before the 360 did. In some sense it IS a near-current gen game

Just shows how far consoles have held PC back the last 7 years.

they should have made staying corpses. but maybe they didn't bother or couldn't multithread the generating-shadow-silhouettes-on-CPU, and it would have dropped below 60 fps on a 3.2GHz PPU or Xenon.. still it's one thing I dislike about doom 3, esp. disintegration from hitting something with your flashlight.

Maybe they are releasing this to generate buzz for Doom 4. Announcement must be imminent.

Well I don't remember any current console games have characters made only with 800 polygons . Doom3 was pretty ahead of its time in graphics but even Resistance 1 takes a dump on it in almost everything except maybe lighting.

Hm, I thought D3 was a pretty decent (and effing scary) game. I haven't been able to replay it in years because I get so fucking creeped out by the random laughing and bangs and stuff breaking and debris flying at me and monsters jumping me from behind and demonic glowing stuff and all of that.

Final Doom wasn't developed by id, but rather Team TNT. I'm sure the issue of royalties would come into play.

well, Doom 3 was a PC game back in 2004 and it was playable using a 1GHz Pentium 3 and DX7 GPU (GF4MX obviously image quality would suffer with such a VGA), in 2004 a high end VGA was a Geforce 6800, but most people were using much less impressive hardware to play it

Wow that Sikkmod looks pretty good! What sort of difference is there in texture resolution compared to the stock game? How's the performance of that mod?

Now you touched my weak point. I have only 7 videos on my Youtube account, just to show the sound quality of different soundfonts.

I am very, very proud of this one I uploaded minutes ago and the Future World by Helloween one. Sounds better than any CD to me at least:

MIDI music is and sounds amazing -if you have a fine General MIDI sounfont- .

I always added a very quick tutorial in my 7 Youtube videos -Description section- to help people to have a nice setup going from the very beginning. It's pretty easy.

As for Doom 3, it was my favourite game in the PS2/Xbox/GC generation. I was so proud of having an Xbox because it was able to run this game....
