Default Other Linux Distros

Came looking in this forum a place to talk the Beyond3D guys about another Linux distro & saw the Ubuntu 11.04 discussion. Thought about posting my new Linux experience there, but figured it would hijack the thread. So I'm starting a different one instead.

Anyway, I never had used Linux before last December. I've used differing OS over the years, but the past 10 years or so I've been using exclusively Windows 2000-XP-Vista-7. Before then I used Windows NT, OS/2 & remote access to varying versions of Unix like BSD, SunOS/Solaris. So it's not like I don't have any experience, but I always had this fear of using Linux. Anyway, I had been hearing about this new Linux distro for netbooks & finally got the courage to install it on my netbook. It was called Jolicloud, but it's now known as Joli OS. Jolicloud is now the name of the desktop launcher that runs in Joli OS or in your browser. I know a lot of you guys might not be interested in it since it's a very simple version of Linux & you're like uber-geeks, but I'm head over heels in love with it. LOL

It's the kind of Linux you can suggest to family & friends who have never used Linux. It's dead simple & most of the time it just works on about any computer(old or new). Anyway, here's the best explanation for it: Joli OS 1.2 is based on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid LTS (Long Term Support) with a 2.6.35 Linux kernel, but it's desktop(Jolicloud) is a special version of Google Chromium that uses HTML5 for all the application icons, etc. It requires either a Jolicloud usernamer/password login or Facebook account. It stores your complete desktop in the cloud & it can be accessed on any device with Joli OS or can be accessed via the web using a modern browser supporting HTML5 like Chrome(there's a Chrome app too), Firefox 4 or Safari 5. You only need Internet access the first time. After that you can log in without Internet access.

The apps it's supports from the Jolicloud desktop launcher are mainly web apps(bookmarks), but it does have a handful of native apps too. Just browse the App Center(feels a lot like the Apple App Store) & you'll found almost anything you would need. In fact, the desktop has a whole iPhone/smartphone feel to it too with big app icons(only 14 per page with support for unlimited pages). It also has a social networking element too so that you can add friends & see what apps they favorite. And it wouldn't be a cloud OS without some support for cloud services like Dropbox and Google Docs right in it's very own HTML5 file browser. Google Chromium is the default browser. If you want to use Firefox you would have to manually install it via terminal or the Synaptic Packet Manager. Yes, it still supports adding any app that runs in Ubuntu.

There's a little more to it, but that's the gist of it. I highly recommend checking it out yourself(dual boot or live version on CD or USB drive). I've quit using Windows at home now for 5 months now & have been using it exclusively. I'm totally converted to cloud computing now. For more info on it check out their site at http://www.jolicloud.com. Also, I've decided to get back into writing & started my own personal blog. I've written quite a few articles & reviews on Jolicloud & Joli OS and you can see them at http://azbat360.wordpress.com/. There you'll see my latest experiences after looking for a new machine that works flawlessly with Joli OS.

BTW, they're always updating Joli OS. It looks like they're about to release Joli OS 1.3 just around the corner. It's suppose to be based on the same version of Ubuntu(10.04 LTS), but will have a newer Linux kernel(2.6.38).

Feel free to use this thread for discussing all kinds of Linux distros. I don't see myself ever using another version of Linux. But I'll try to post here when new versions of Joli OS come out.
