About every game thread out there includes a wish for MLAA. It seems to be the lens flare of 2010 but I'm not sure why. Is there something which makes MLAA so great?

Lens-flare was a gimmick (in most cases, though some titles used to to aid realism). MLAA is an IQ enhacing method with exceptional results in games it's well suited to. Look at the latest screenshots of LBP2 to see how amazingly clean games can look with MLAA.

Are there any photos of the crumbling city? Every preview I read mentions their demo ending in a large city area, with collapsed buildings, where they're attacked by a large boss with a grenade launcher. They all say it's an incredible view, but I can't find a single picture.

From what I read, they didn't allow photos/videos during that the session.

That sucks. I wonder why? It seems to be the part people walked away most impressed with. If it's got such great buzz, why not show a couple screenshots even?

Quakecon needs something to show off, too... Actually the appearance of Rage was completely unexpected to me, I thought id will wait with gameplay videos until Quakecon. It's probably because of Bethesda and their general lack of AA content that we've seen anything at all.

Forgot about Quakecon. That would definitely be the reason.

Wild guess maybe doom 4 footage Quakecon this year. Believe

Still miss the time where E3 was the event where you could see game evolve each year because they were shown 3 years before release.

With 60fps speed and the controller responsiveness it allows, they're pretty much in a league of their own in online multiplayer - noone else does it all or has enough time to catch up. If they don't f*** up, they're gonna seriously distrupt the online FPS gaming community.

(Although there's a small chance that the fast paced gameplay will only work for really good and skilled players...)
Sounds great. It's about time we had proper run and gun shooter again.

I thing they ought to release 60fps direct feed videos only. Shows one of the strengths of the game (framerate) and the awesome animation system.

Hopefully there WON'T be any DOOM stuff at QuakeCon, id needs to learn to show stuff for the first time within the year they're releasing the game.

Richard,
If you still have Carmack's ear, tell him to get off his ass and release Rage already! Game is looking good so far. I'm stoked.

Yeah, 60fps vid would be nice. Then grandmaster can do his thing. Also agree about the animation system. It looks pretty nice. I was surprised about that. Not something I expected from iD.

I agree about Doom. I hate seeing a game pop up at E3 five years running. One or two times is enough. I like announcements within a year of release, ideally.

I don't know technical aspects of the games, but I really love this game's graphics...And 60 FPS on top of that!(where it feels most games today struggle holding 30 FPS)

And I love that ID Software makes the games pretty simple...DOOM 3 may not have been the most innovative game, but I honestly loved it(and I first played the XBOX version btw)

Ok, the best, high quality video I have been able to find is here: http://e3.gamespot.com/video/6266586/?hd=1

This game is gorgeous, and looks like it could be fun. I am not really sold that it is open world, looks like Borderlands-type open worlds where everything is connected by narrow valleys instead of vast expanses which I like ore.

At 5 minutes in that video the character is close up on the face of another character... and it looks AMAZING>

Does anyone else think that Rage is definetely running AA (at least some) even on console? Looks pretty smooth to me.

That's a really nice vid. The game looks incredible. Hopefully it's actually fun, but visually (tech or not) this game is top notch.

Great vid, but it seems to me that they have to re-work the looks of the water a little bit, otherwise - I am getting prepared for another Bortherlands experience (one of my fav games!)

EDIT: at 14:57, you see a close up of a texture - looks rather muddy to be honest! What's up here, I thought with Megatexture you get razor sharp textures in close up even on consoles?
So, what does this Mega stands for again...

I'm not sure they promised high detail textures up close on the consoles. The real advantage of mega texture is being able to customize every single piece of texture information to be unique. The entire world is mapped with one big virtual texture. Games can lose the "repeat texture" look. There are also advantages in memory efficiency. I think there is a beyond3d article somewhere that explains the tech.

The textures are going to be same on PC, well atleast the same as PS3...unless they want to make a 50-60GB game for PC.

Looks like they will still have "monster closets". But hey, I guess it wouldn't be an iD game without them.

Carmack's hardly involved these days. Maybe Richard can get him to launch his rocket, since that's one of the things he's more interested in:P

Very nice! Seems like there's either no AA at all, or maybe 2x (but I find even that unlikely).

I don't have too many problems with the character shaders, it's more about the nice textures, giving the entire image a nice, painted style.
Although dark areas are indeed reminescent of Doom3 with a little to many black pixels... some sort of ambient lighting would benefit the results IMHO.
