Default Angel Of Darkness

Christ, I can not believe how bad this turned out to be.

(Eidos, 3 years ago...)

... you know, we've got this franchise about a lithe, athletic character, but people are tired of her, it's the same old same old, every time..

Hey! I know! We'll make here steer like a dumptruck! That'll bring fresh life to the franchise! My god! That's brilliant! Loooong times to stop and start moving, an inability to choose the direction she's facing, difficulty navigating simple things like doors and a s-l-o-o-w running speed. Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! And then we'll have timed sections - shit interface versus the Paris police! Is that a concept or is that a concept?! Man we are so good...

Morons.

Somebody's going to disagree, but yeah.

Tomb Raider has not suffered the same good fate that other popular franchises like Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog (which got better and better with new installments) have. After the first game (which was awesome, IMO) it just went downhill. Level design fell a bit, and they didn't really innovate at all.. not even within their own series!

Now I hear that the new Tomb Raider game for PS2 (which does add more gameplay to the TR formula) sucks, so there goes that franchise. Poor Eidos. Hopefully The Cradle of Life will bomb.. since TR2, the series doesn't deserve its popularity.

Yup... each time they released a new one, Eidos said they were trying to recapture what made the first one great. Unfortunately, what made the first one great were a whole bunch of things that hadn't been done before. Once they had been done... difficult to capture that newness in a sequel.

I personally throught that 1 was great, and 2 had a few new ideas (settings, vehicles, more shooty bits, not to mention being the first natively 3d accelarated one) but then it petered out. I always thought the third one should have nicked some ideas from Thief, as it always struck me that hiding in shadows would work better in a third person game, as you would actually have a valid reason for constantly watching the third person figure (how well hidden is she) rather than using the artifical 'light gem' of Thief and similar titles. It would also de-emphasise combat, which was hardly a strength. And stealing someone else's idea would have simplified life for the imaginatively-challenged designers. Still, I guess Splinter Cell did something similar?

Anyway, back to the shop for Lara today. I am officially a 3 and a half game Croft fan. Heigh ho. It was good while it lasted.

A.

IIRC, on 3DFX too. I remember switching to it halfway through the game when the GLide port came out on my Orchid Righteous 3D.

Well I am a bit biased towards PCX2, it indirectly got me my current job.

Same here, and I remember telling a friend that the PC had finally surpassed consoles as I was showing the game to him.

Let's clarify one thing real quick: Eidos is a publisher, not a developer. Core makes the Tomb Raider games.

Personally, I liked TR2 and TR4. The rest never appealed to me. Some of the console-oriented fans of the series may drool over the graphics of the supposedly new engine, but it looks almost exactly the same as a 3D accelerated TR4. Maybe a few extra polys in her face and boobs, granted, but it's strikingly similar.

Core is a wholly owned subsidiary. IIRC, the head guy at Core was on the board at Eidos until he resigned last week. For all intents and purposes, Core is a development arm of Eidos, just as Bullfrog or Origin became just another team at EA.

Yes, but saying:

is a woefully misleading an inaccurate statement. Eidos publishes games, and they've published quite a few games (Thief, Deus Ex, Soul Reaver, Hitman... etc). Granted, I think Eidos is a piss-poor publisher who likes to rush their devs as much as humanly possible, but that's about par for the course.
