Adventure game from German developers that is a fast-pased adventure game. Link to official site has links to reviews where it scored quite high. The graphic is also quite nice (after patch 1.02 which uppgrades graphics). Be sure to check it out!

It seems unusual to me to include such major graphical overhaul a patch. Are there any other examples of this? And why would they do it so soon after release? Surely reviewers would be looking at the original code.

Yes, we saw something similar from the likes of Egosoft with the X series. A German release comes first, and then several months later when the localisation is done, the US/English version arrives with a later patch level out of the box that includes bug fixes, game/graphics improvements.

Venetica is a reasonably fun Action-RPG. It's a completely linear, story-driven game, kinda like Witcher or KotOR. The combat system is simple but fun (more so than in The Witcher or Risen), it involves a lot of doging attacks und there is a selection of useful spells . The boss fights can be hard at first because it's not always obvious how to defeat them but once you get the idea, they become easy.
Graphics range from very pretty to ugly (thanks to some sloppy textures in some places), but all in all it's visually appealing and the setting hasn't been done to death. There seems to be no mipmapping for ground textures, so be prepared for lots of texture flickering. The animations are extremly well done. I've played the game pre-1.02-patch and performance kinda sucked when forcing AA in the drivers, especially when considering that the graphics aren't too impressive. Not sure if the patch fixed the performance issues but the upgraded graphics seem to look nice, judging from the video. Venetica is 20-25 hours of light-weight Action-RPG fun. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it's certainly not a must-have title and it has no replay value whatsoever. I had more fun playing this than I had playing Risen (but the two games aren't really comparable).

Germany is more or less the Western haven of PC gaming.

This makes me very happy. A German friend of mine completed this game much earlier in the year, and loved just about every minute of it. |

Venetica is a really nice action-rpg. It's a little slow until you get out of the first village, but the visuals are very lush. It's a lot of fun, and has some terrific story telling, though it does seem a little rushed towards the end.
