That movie made me wish MST3K was still being produced.

Hehe, reminds me of when I used to buy every single horror movie ever released. There are some truly bad ones, "Blood Hook" is a notable example. I've since stopped collecting movies so I'm sure I've missed out on other more recent "gems."

I don't mean I hate those films - I've seen all the films mentioned here, and laughed a lot for most of them. But I consider a movie "good" when it feels fresh, not when the same guy makes the same funny faces for the 30th time. These standard comedies are just a way to avoid boredom for a couple of hours.
Yes these are sort of my thoughts, I dont watch many comedies at all cause I dont really find them that funny
though these have all been worthwhile to watch
wedding crashers 7/10
eternal sunshine 8/10
tropic thunder 7/10 // a bit of a letdown, should of been much better

Coen bro's comedies are usually good though or other recent 2000-> lesser known comedies worth watching are (next time youre in a video shop check them out)

American Splendor http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0305206/
The Price of Milk http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0249893/
Harry un ami qui vous veut du bien http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0216800/
Series 7: The Contenders http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251031/
slither http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439815/
soulkeeper http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212867/
The Rage in Placid Lake http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0305999/
tongan ninja http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0352925/

any other recent suggestions from ppl? (only lesser known films as I've more than likely seen the well known ones)

heres a film from 1998, very funny (though does taper off at bit from halfway onwards)
Le dīner de cons http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119038/
but I recommend everyone to watch

The Wolfman 6/10 - Some good sets, but del Toro and his obvious wig just didn't cut it for me. Too much use of insto-scare tactics and not enough suspense.

2012 - 3/10: I wanted to beat the editors. This movie could easily have been a 7 or better. It even lacked the numerous plot holes that plague this genre. As edited it just plain sucked.

Halloween 2 (2009)

8/10

I don't care what anyone says. I love this movie. Sometimes you have to completely disavow any sense of reality. Comparatively speaking, modern slashers are something to be ridiculed, especially remakes, but I actually really enjoy Rob Zombie's Halloween series. His other movies are pretty trashy, though. And for some reason, whenever I engage in conversations about the Halloween series, everyone seems to hate the new Michael Myers, whereas I think he's great. I like him being a behemoth, instead of some scrawny guy in a mask.

Shutter Island- 9/10

A real mind bender. I absolutely loved this film. I'm a little shocked it ranked so low, at 66%, on rottentomatoes.com, but I was never really one to follow reviews.

Watched Babel last night on HD DVD, while too scared to turn on my PS3 I remembered it being fantastic at the cinema, but hadn't seen in it since (picked up the HD DVD during the fire sale of discs when the format died). Not sure what's happened to me as a person in the interim years, but the film was really deep for me this time, and I found I understood the underlying message about really listening to people and language a lot more.

The entire film is an example of what can happen if you're careless and don't take the time to really understand other people and their motivations. When it was all woven together at the end I was deeply satisfied. Terrific film, only spoiled by the pace of things at times (too slow for me, some stuff was over indulgent).

Really well shot, fantastic audio production (there are big chunks of the film with no dialogue) and very well acted. I know I've watched a movie that clicked with me when I spend 2 hours on IMDb afterwards researching the acting and production talent for a film so I can find new movies by the same people to watch.

Oh, and I'm not sure whether it was the original film, the transfer, my TV or my 360, but there's some really poor juddering while the camera pans in places.

9.5/10 though, brilliant.

The Hurt Locker-

9.5/10

I'm pleased this movie cleaned house at the Academy Awards ceremony. Jeremy Renner is a fucking fantastic actor who deserves lots of acclaim. The art of diffusing bombs has never been more tense, and I feel the movie really brought home the reality of the Specialist's doing this job. Excellent, excellent movie.

Alice in Wonderland: 4/10.

Decent visuals. Incoherent, random and very thin storyline.

Yep, a typical Tim Burton film.

Thank You for Smoking: 8/10
Great movie. Entertaining, snarky, witty. There's one major science flub, but otherwise a very good movie.

Wife talked me into watching the Time Traveller's Wife over the weekend. I smacked her once the credits started rolling.

My gf loved the book and went to see the movie and said it sucked. However there was a guy one row ahead that was crying like a 14year old girl watching Titanic for the first time...

Alice in Wonderland: 7/10. Quite enjoyed the movie. Saw it in IMAX 3D. The 3D wasn't anywhere near Avatar levels. Twiddledee/dum and White Queen were terrible. The rest were good. Alice was surprisingly good. Haven't seen her before, I think. They could have spent more time on the characters in Wonderland.

I didnt think it was that good, same with fast food nation, enron smartest guys in the room (though more doco) etc I cant thnk of any similar film that I thought 'wow that was brilliant'. Idocracy would be the closest Ild say

wierd cause the subject matter is open for great comedy

I saw a film yesterday '9 dead gay guys'
now in that film they went on about 'large cock's up the ass + the pleasure from that'
now Ive never been fucked up the ass, but honestly I cant see the enjoyment, and even moreso for a donkey dick(*), so honestly is it enjoyable. I asked a gay friend of mine years ago, he seemed to think it was but Im not 100% convinced

(*)who was in the film

I thought the genius of Smoking was how well the story revolved around the "if they're wrong, you must be right" form of debate. Idiocracy, on the other hand, seemed a great plot idea but I found the film itself inanely predictable and unfunny.

I just saw Repo Men. As a comedy I'd give it a 7.5/10, but I'm not really sure if that's what they were going for.

I agree with you on both points. I haven't seen Thank You for Smoking for some time but remember it as a very clever and enjoyable film.

On the other hand, I watched Idiocracy just a few weeks ago and thought it was rather crappy. Good concept, poor (and dull) execution.

Well the two films are aimed at differnt audiences.

thank you for smoking tries for a more 'elitist' audience, but is not as witty or smart as the writers thought it was. It lets the industry off far too lightly, hell they could of easily taken it far more but it seems as if they were too scared for some reason.
I did give it 6/10 though so slightly better than average

OTOH Idiocracy has no retentions it is plain old US college humor style (which I + my gf usually hate though we both enjoyed here ) somehow it manages to rise above the lowbrow even with the 'penis mobile'

another similar film -> the yes men also 6/10

definitely a comedy its been quite a few years since I saw it but it was one of the better cult comedies of the 80s, similar theme to the other movies I mentioned in the last couple of posts as well

M. 10/10. One of the best films I've ever seen. Peter Lorre is wonderful in the final scene.

yes 'M' is a truly great film 8/10
Peter Lorre is always good
A couple of scenes I love is when the cops are in the room / and crimals in another
and theyre all literally smoking away constantly, the rooms are so filled with smoke you can bearly see 5 meters.
Perhaps it was exaggerated for this film but does show you how ubiquitous smoking was at the time
