GOG.com suffered a short downtime, but has come back with a new update and a free game for your troubles. The Microprose point-and-click adventure game Dragonsphere has been added to the catalog of free games, joining Beneath a Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Teenagent, and Tyrian 2000.

Free Söldner (Marine Corps) Community Edition Released

The Söldner Secret Wars Website now offers the Söldner (Marine Corps) Community Edition, a completely free revised version of Söldner (Marine Corps), Wings Simulations' military first-person shooter. It's not clear what business model this uses, if any, as they say: "In contrast to most Free2play-systems, there won't be any charged services or items which provide players advantages for payment." The game features destructible environments, more than 100 weapons, vehicles, customizable multiplayer, an online commander mode, a gesture system, and unit customization.

The download is mirrored on Gamer's Hell.

Realm of the Mad God is a strangely addictive online flash MMORPG.

Don't mind the 8-bit graphics

Also a couple of dedicated fans are still developing for this game and modding it.
There are not many players left but usually one server is if full.
It's like Battlefiled, mixed with Wolfenstein ET with a fully destructible, huge seamless world (about 40.000km2), where small parts of it are a game area.

Arma 2 has been free for a while. You don't get the SP campaign, but you're not missing much. The single player fun to be had is mainly making your own battles in the editor and jumping in. I own the full version and definitely spend more time doing that than trying to get through the buggy and difficult to understand campaign.

You can play online too. Check it out here.

I actually didn't spot that. Have a look for yourself:

Any reason Arma2 hasn't been added to the list?

It's not a free release of the original but a cut-down version, same as with F.E.A.R. Multiplayer.

Söldner Community Edition has been out for some time now, I haven't tried it sthough:
http://www.soldnersecretwars.de/?mod...ion=view&id=36

It's similar to Battlefield2 as far as I can see (no, I haven't played BF2), but better.

That sentence by itself shows you've never played Battlefield 2

Söldner was brilliant idea that failed miserably. It's kind of like Battlefield 2 mixed with Operation Flashpoint. but in a way you get all the spam and in the end have no idea what killed you.

And at that time some not too thrilling graphics.

Of course you could try sneaking up to a base and get killed after a five minute walk. Often you could get revenge too, and usually you move in as a team and catch up to it after death with a quad to pick up your weapons.

Now there were "high-money" servers, where everyone could get a Comanche chopper or whatever - the game play wasn't made for this and it resulted in a spawn-kill-fest.

Actually I've felt no spam of any sorts when playing on properly setup servers, except on purposely small-scaled fun-matches with 32 players with shotguns, where grenade spamming would occur.

Almost all maps are so big, that there can't be spawn raping etc., except sometimes when a base was about to fall into enemy hands.

I think the devs threw the high-money option out now anyway. It's more fun when team-play is required if you want to win, since you can only buy heavy armour using a collectively earned team budget. Only with luck can you earn yourself a bigger tank.

edit: I think it failed mainly because it was a pile of bugs, when it came out. I played the demo for a while when it came out, but then forgot about it for about four years and bought it, and many bugs where patched out. The developer filed for bankruptcy because Jowood didn't pay them to do the patches I think.
Then they hired another group of fans and programmers to do a sequel, but unfortunately it got cancelled. I guess it wasn't platform compatible enough with the Gameboy Colour (lack of RAM).
