Thumbs up GOG - Cheap, Classic PC games without DRM

Oct 22 2008 EDIT: The store has gone public!

Saw on Teh Shack an interview with the GOG guys (Good Old Games). They're setting up an online store where you can buy and download old classics such as Fallout and Giants: Citizen Kabuto.

Quote:

Tom Ohle: Nope. The whole goal is basically totally free of copy protection and DRM. We've got custom installers that come with each product. Run it [on one PC], and if you go to your laptop or whatever, you can just download it again.
No copy-protection, no CD-check, no online activation. Yummy! There will be two price points: $5.99 and $9.99 and the games will be supported on XP and Vista. The website also mentions walkthroughs, soundtracks, editors, etc. will be available for the games you buy.

Check out the Official Site and sign up for the beta test.

Certainly something I'm interested in. Playing Diablo 2 again has me wanting to revisit even more old games.

Looks awesome. I love the titles they chose for their front page too.

This is awesome. Of course I just buy games for the same prices that are on a CD, but these are DRM free. It is a conundrum though to me as I like the physical media, though form what you said you could download them over and over which is a bonus.

Thats kinda the only gripe I have with that project. Either I already have them or the "good" aint meaning much in good old games

And I`d still prefer picking up a "Gold Games" Collection over downloadable Stuff... but thats probably just me.

CD Projekt, not CD Projeck. They are publishing 75% of the titles in Poland and have some healthy share in Czech. They partner with pretty much everyone except for Take Two, Ubi, Sony, Nintendo and Eidos. I'd expect GOG's offering to expand with time.

Well I got my invite to the beta, with a free game from a selection if I purchase something.

I already know my free game (Giants: Citizen Kabuko) but what should I get as my non free game? I'm tempted by Fallout (1 or 2 ?) but I have the feeling it might be a bit old school for me... help me spend my money, B3D!

mcrae rally 2005 you can get for free from gametap
freespace 2 is one of the greatest games evar...

you can also get it free with source code added goodness
pps: if your wondering what is freespace2 open well its the open source version of freespace2
but added
opengl renderer
hardware tnl support
high poly models
high resolution textures
normal mapping
specular mapping
alpha environment mapping
glow mapping
new ai
specular highlights
widescreen support
multiple resolutions (retail only supports 3)
changeable fov

FS2 is the best space sim, period. I can't imagine anything dethroning it anytime soon, which is kind of sad. I wish there were more space sims like in days of yore, I'd even buy a joystick!

This is fantastic, thanks!

FS2 is great, I also recommend Freelancer. Still plenty of servers up for multiplayer!

I got a beta code by accident. I put my e-mail into their sign up thing a few months ago in an attempt to get more info about it, and I wound up getting a code when I have zero cash to spend at their website.

D'oh!

You think you've got it bad, I.S.T., I got my code when I don't even have a computer (and won't, for another year or two). I'ma buy Fallout 2 and Freespace 2 now anyways, even though I still have my original discs in a box in the UK. Well worth buying a second time.

Hmmm... but I also want Operation: Flashpoint! And I never completed Fallout: Tactics! And I love Shogo: Mobile Armour Division! Arrrrgh! Can't they have a Buy 3 Get 3 Free offer?

By the way, if you applied for the beta using a Hotmail account, my beta code from gog.com ended up in my junk folder.

I wonder if we'll see the same compatability issues with these games that we have in ages past. I remember trying to get MDK working in XP (when it first came out) and I could only get it working in software mode!

Regardless - I'm excited - old games own!
