If i remember correctly they're both 720p w/ the PS3 having no AA & the 360 having 2xAA.

I'm not positive on that though; but i think that's what it was.

For that I believe the PS3 had a 1080p mode.

Anyone know why the PS3 Civ Rev has black borders/underscan when running in 1080p mode on TV's with 1:1 pixel mapping?

How large are the borders? Perhaps for 1080p mode, they decided to render to a 960x1080 buffer, but leave the top and bottom 60 rows of pixels unused, and let the hardware scaler do the horizontal scaling. In other words, render to a 960x960 view window in a 960x1080 buffer, and the hardware horizontally scales that out to 1920x1080. That would keep the pixel shader load the same as 1280x720p mode since (1280x720) == (960x960)...but result in black borders at the top and bottom.

fairly large, and on all four sides.

Those are normal black borders left for overscan, IMO

Well questions remain... Did the developer choose to render a limited view window within the output buffer? Did the developer render normally and manually reduced the view window (ala Army of Two on PS3)?

I'm obviously just a dumb noob but...why do I see the black borders on this game on PS3 running in 1080p, but not other games running in 1080p, with the TV set in 1:1 pixel mapping?

Some developers choose to account for overscan, most do not.

In situations such as this, with Civilization: Revolution, developers really should allow for manual adjustment of overscan, like MGS4 and MLB 08: The Show do.

But then again, the extra mandatory borders might just be an attempt to compensate a bit for the performance loss incurred when doing software scaling on the PS3.

not going to attempt resolution (although i think its at least 720p) but looks like theres no AA. looks great, though... lots of detail and great art direction.

Those images look pretty good - considering there’s no anti-aliasing.

I know 1024X576 will resize to 1280X720 on TV so we have seen

It's because the screens made in MGS4 with the camera are automatically downsized to various sizes, the largest (yet still downsized) beeing 1024 x 576.

You'll have to wait for the new PS3 firmware screenshot feature for true internal resolution screens.

The screen isn't chopped to fit, but shrunk. It's a bit like a PC game being rendered at a lower resolution.
