Default DNF is really coming out this time

http://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/st...4/daily17.html

Every year there is a thread about the rumour of a DNF release date.
It seems that DNF is like Christmas, happens every year.

The thought of DNF really coming out scares me. I got so used to it being in development forever that changing it will break my view of the world. A legend will end and the harsh reality of business sets in. No more dreams, no more hopes.

It will come out. And it will rock like nothing before it (I have no real data, but a very good feeling this time).

Eh, I'm 30 years old now... I doubt can still be impressed by a bunch of pixel strippers and cheesy one-liners.

I don't think that is possible.

Which is precisely why I think this game will come out eventually. This game has become the laughing stock of the gaming world, and someone is bound to figure out that when this game does come out, not taking itself very seriously, and being half-decent, it will be so much above expectations that it will get 1 more point on average than it really deserves and potentially actually make some money.

While we have internal targets, dates and goals, like every developer, we are not ready to share them. What's amazing about this is that the DBJ must have assumed that we'd actually announce a date to them, and not gaming press, and that even in the light of Scott's quote of "We can't make an official announcement.", the DBJ effectively did that. Lesson learned.

The release date is still 'when it's done', and will be until the appropriate moment. Platforms have not been finalized or announced. You can rest assured that we are moving toward a goal and that the recently released teaser trailer is the start of that process and seeing more of the game, sooner than later.

We apologize to gamers and websites everywhere for this series of events. Sometimes, you can be too trusting of people and assume things that come back to bite you. Lesson learned.

You should probably insert something to make it apparent that you are quoting GeorgeB.

Good point, I was starting to think Davros was working for 3D Realms.

I hear ya, I just turned 30 last month. Still hard to believe it's been in development this long. *shrugs*

No way it can live up to the hype. It's been talked about so long, people will expect a step above Crysis graphic wonder from it. Why else would it take so long to make will be their reasoning.

The web will be full of "it took this long for this?"

And who said it isn't possible? Team Fortress II has been in development for years as well and got restarted two times. But the end result is great and one of the most great multiplayer games that was released recently. My top online FPS game.

I don't think DNF and TF2 are comparable at all. DNF needs to deliver a solid single player experience, going up against a much more developed FPS landscape than the days of Duke3d. These days, it seems like the revised Dooms, Quakes, and Unreals just don't have the same grip on gaming and culture that they once used to. I'm not sure if DNF can turn out any differently.

TF2 on the other hand was able to sidestep comparisons with the BF franchise by not really trying to be much more than what QWTF or TFC were. Graphics and art aside, there's nothing really new or revolutionary about it.

I heard something similar before. And back then, a friend actually _preordered_ it.
And that wasnt in this millenium.

Uh, I think I too pre-ordered that thing like a decade ago. I can't remember where or if they're still in business even. I mean, it would be kinda fun, once DNF is released, to call them up and ask them when that god-damn game that I pre-ordered in the 1990s will be delivered.

Where is that much more developed landscape? We stuill haven't moved an inch further than Hals-Life 1, actually not even there yet with any newer game.

Looking at the sales numbers, these say you're wrong.

What? Some FPS games that were released since HL (1998):

- Deus Ex
- System Shock 2
- FarCry
- Half Life 2
- Operation Flashpoint
- Metriod Prime
- STALKER

I said developed compared to Duke3d-era FPS. We're talking about comparing Doom, Duke3d, and Quake to HL1, HL2, Deus Ex, SS2 and even the MoH/CoD series.

I honestly haven't checked the PC sales numbers, but I'm assuming that UT3 is going to end up selling worse than UT2k3, UT(99)? I'm assuming that Quake4 sold worse than the Quakes of 10 years ago did? I know Doom3 sold pretty well, but I'd venture a guess that more people played the original as well.

In terms of multiplayer, I don't need to assume that the arcade deathmatch genre (Doom,Quake,UT,etc) has no where near as large a piece of the pie as they used to. Even if you ignore the MMOs and RTSs, and just strictly look at the FPSs played online, it's mostly made up of semi-realistic, tactical squad-based games like CS, CoD, and the BF series. As I said, they(Doom,Quake,UT,etc) no longer carry the same grip on PC gaming or online gaming culture that they used to 10+ years ago.

Some great games there, but besides *maybe* Stalker, none of those moved the genre any further than HL-1 in any regard.

Hugh: the latest Quake sold well, Doom 3 was topping the charts in quite a few countries, HL-2 also. All recycled old stuff in the end.

My comment regarding the "more developed FPS landscape" was in response to the issue of whether or not DNF can live up to the hype. From a gameplay perspective, imo all of the major sequels from the FPS titles from the mid-late 90's did not live up to hype, especially Doom3.

When I brought up "grip on gaming and culture", I was referring to the fact that the Dooms, Quakes, and Unreals are virtually dead when compared to activity within communities like WoW, CS, BF, CoD, etc.
