Default Scalar Operations

The G80 uses a scalar architecture and the boffins round here seem to think that the R600 will too.

So, does this mean that both will necessarily perform the same operations?

i.e will one G80 stream processor necessarily do the same calculations as an R600 stream processor, assuming that it is scalar?

TIA

What exactly do you mean by "same operations"?

Many CPUs are scalar architectures. That doesn't mean the instruction sequences you get from compiling the same code for each of these platforms are identical, or even similar.

What I was trying to ask : Presuming the R600 shader processors are scalar, does that mean they necessarily do the same work as a G80 shader processor? I see that what you are saying is no.

I'm just trying to get my head around the whole 320 vs 128 scalars thing.

Thanks for the response.
