Default video problems with 7600GS

Lately I've had a strange problem show up whenever I try and watch .avi, .mpeg, or .wmv videos. The videos run fine, except they are very dark. The strange thing is flash videos look fine, and DVDs also look totally fine. I had this problem occur about 2 months ago. Back then, I cleaned my drivers, reinstalled them, but that didn't help. The problem mysteriously went away by itself, and now it's back again.

I'm running a 7600GS with 93.71 drivers. I don't think it's a hardware problem, but I can't figure out if this is a driver problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

I ... have no idea. Just to kick things off, maybe adjust the overlay gamma? That should be an option in the driver control panel.

And welcome to the forums!

slightly out of topic, but in overlay settings in nvidia drivers, color saturation is set at 114% by default, since I discovered this semi-hidden dishonnest thing I set it to 100% at each driver install .

I second Pete, it's about overlay. you could also try reading the videos in media player classic, go to settings and switch the output to VMR.

Thanks for the help, I got a temporary fix for it . I switched from using the overlay mixer to VMR 9, and that corrected the problem! Now all the videos look fine. Funny thing is if I switch back to using the overlay mixer, they look dark again. I'll stick to VMR 9 for now, but I want to know what caused the problem with the overlay mixer in the first place. Was it the drivers, or a codec?

I also tried playing around with the overlay settings in the Nvidia control panel, but they did not help, and only made the videos look worse.

I've found a workaround with VMR 9, but I would still appreciate any insight as to why the videos look dark when using the overlay mixer. And they look weird in all video players that I have tried. I have to manually set each player to use VMR 9 in order for them to look fine.
