Is that normal? I've done a couple 50-hour WUs and I already thought that was the maximum i could tolerate. Now I have received two new WUs for my two PCs (one 1.46GHz Celeron M, one Athlon 64 3200+) that I both estimate to take roughly 100 hours of fully dedicated folding to finish. I don't often run my stuff 24/7, so it'll take me at least a week to get these done.
I think that's just crazy. As I understand it the WU granularity can be set by Stanford pretty much arbitrarily. Larger WUs mean less connections to the coordinating servers, I can see that, but not to this extent. FaH is a social thing, too. As a contributor I want to see some progress and gratification. If I have no chance to generate more points before a week of folding, that sucks. Besides just risking loss of interest in the face of a huge obstacle, longer run-times also incur a higher risk of the work getting corrupted on the way (quitting/restarting on the next day can sometimes do that). I think there might be advantages to deadline management too. I think a one-day WU (i.e. ten to twelve hours on a tbd average spec PC) would be just really nice. Two days would still be good. How do I get Stanford to hear me, or alternatively tell me how irrelevant my feelings are? PS: the Celeron M laptop uses the default config, which means it doesn't request any special, large, strange etc WUs. I've allowed the other PC to request "large memory" WUs, so it might be my fault for that machine, but not for the laptop. edit: both machines are currently engaged in lambda_5way_melt projects. I guess that's why you have 50 days to return your WUs on PC? I don't know. It's much more stressful with the 2 day return on the PS3
