wii easily, the others are too cluttered
u should be able to sell it on the brand alone without extra info
like the mercedes-benz symbol having it is enuf, without informing the customer it comes with electric windows etc

It's only by virtue of the Wii being both a name and a logo. Granted the Xbox ones are too cluttered, but the PC one has to give information like DVD. I personally like the Games for Windows one. It's clear, it's easy on the eye and it provides important information in an obvious place, besides of course that it is Games for Windows.

The two xbox ones are too cluttered.
The wii is too bland, though it just the white wii part is what we're supposed to be looking at it might be fine. If the yellow clouds are part of it, that's pretty ugly.

Playstation 3 is too busy.
Playstation 2 looks like not enough effort went into it.
Games for windows looks pretty good.

I like the PS2 and games for windows ones most, I think... The PS3 ones aren't bad, but I like the horizontal rather than vertical. Games for Windows one is a bit more cluttered, but it has a nice look.

Don't really like the Xbox/360 ones as they are kind of cluttered, now that I think about it.

Don't really like the Wii one because of the yellow blobs -- looks like a honeycomb almost -- I do like the simplicity though.

I'd have to go with the PS2 one ultimately. I also like the side of the PS2 boxes the most (although I do like the 360's side as well -- PS3's isn't bad either, but the red PS3 logo looks kind of strange to me still).

Regardless, this is probably the silliest thing I've sat and examined in quite a while.

same!!! i have been complaining about it since i first saw the box art for a game (dunno )

i guess its not horizontal because....

- blu ray box has different dimensions to ps2 one
- font would look too small

I love that they used the BR sized boxes though (although they are thicker) -- the DVD size is still needlessly large (although not too bad, as it could be worse!). I'd prefer CD sized cases almost (I loved those on PS1), but DVD size isn't anything to complain about.

I like the Games for Windows one. It looks nearly identical to the header on one of my older website designs

If MS would remove the "Only on ******" box then the 360 design would be much better. Otherwise the Games for Windows is better, even though they are the same besides logo and color.

XBox 360 would get my vote (if I could vote), but I still prefer the Japanese Saturn game packaging.

With owning everyone of them except a Wii, and a PC cable enough to play any games with some candy, I have been having the most fun playing games on 360 so far.

I think this thread needs a little clarification. The Wii logo as shown above isn't correct. The Wii banner does not have a yellow wobble - it's just a white corner-tag with the name.

My take:

Xbox is too cluttered.
Wii + PS2 are boring
Games For Windows has that 21st clean shaded look.
PS3 is simple but involving enough.

From example covers I've looked at, the PS3 trim fits best with the cover-artwork. The GFW logo is nice standalone, but looks out of place on a box. The downside to PS3's is the skinny aspect ratio.

What's really need for this evaluation is a number of example pics of the same games in different boxes, if you want consideration to be of the trim design in situ, rather than just the design without regard for it's appearance on the box.

I got it from Warioware: Smoothmoves i don't know how to cut it out neatly

thats gonna take 5000x4000 resolution!
the reason for me just cutting frame out is because frame gave me different impression for me depending on what game i looked at. for games like RR7, ps3 frame looks all right, but looking at games like NBA2k7 it looked ugly for me

A comparison of full box-arts. Just a simple mockup that doesn't take into account different aspect ratios or box sizes. Wii's logo obviously doesn't overlap the game title! Also the Wii logo is a little too large in the fabricated box's. I used Ant1Fanb0y1sm's source pic and scaled them all to the same width. Click the pic for a double-sized chart.

Laid out like this, PS3's covers look the best to me. And copy and paste any title you want to spread that word that 'Game xxx is coming to Platform Y - here's the box art!'

Nice chart Shifty. I like the ps3's the most, but I don't like the red '3' on the side of the boxes too much. They should of made it black&white. The games for windows one works well too imo. Though I did like the times when PC games had no frame at all.

Xbox 1 and PS3 ones look the most pleasing to me. I also feel that the importance of this is life altering

Nice work there Shifty.

The Games for Windows looks the nicest IMO, as it has a very clean design. The Playstation 3 one looks ok as it doesn't impede too much on the box art so I don't feel it's as noticable, (although I don't like the little Playstation logo in the top corner). The Xbox and and Playstation 2 ones have too much contrast with the box art. The Xbox 360 one is too busy, the Wii one doesn't seem to work unless you design the box art with it in mind.

Just looked up the Gamecube frame again, it is by far the best IMO. I personally love the Gamecube logo plus the fact that the Gamecube frame is very simple.

What I dislike about the Playstation 3 frame is the fact that it comes across as cheap. The Xbox frame suffers from the same problem. Any time highlights and bright spots are used on a design I tend to dislike it. The Xbox however is way to busy and the gold and green don't do it for me.

I really like the Xbox 360 and Games for Windows, as they are basically the exact same design anyway but with changed logos. The Xbox 360 suffers from the "Only on Xbox 360" stamp that is also just far to cheap for me, it seems like an after thought once the design was already done.
