That's because the Burning Crusade expansion will include the original as well. Stores are trying to clear their inventories because they're finally realizing those boxes are about to become valueless. The digital distribution has to follow store prices just to keep sales going.

Also, the more copies they sell now, the more established consumers will be around to buy the expansion.

The price you pay for the game includes 1 month (in some games 2?) of free playing.

Do they still have a flat monthly fee and give no discounts for 3,6 or 12 month subscription?

Subscripting to 3, 6 or 12 months has always been a bit cheaper, at least in europe.

In the US its always been given discounts for 3, 6, and 12 months also.

Frankly I'm fine with paying for WoW monthly, the amount of new stuff they give players on a fairly regular basis is grand.

Yay, it's cheaper so now more people can easily afford to retard their minds.

Do the world a favour, don't purchase and/or play this game. Play...oh I don't know, Duke Nukem. it's more intelligent, looks far better too

still doesnt justify the 59.99 or even 49.99 price tag that most ship with, when you've established a huge popularity all you're doing to being greedy with the games cost. Lesser known mmos, especially ones not backed by a large publisher, need the game sales to compensate for the customers that will never actually pay a fee for more then a month or two if at all, in the case of wow i personally think they abused it badly.

WoW dropped price down to $39 and then $29 over time like most games. Like most extremely popular games the price stayed high for a longer amount of time. Sorry if you werent informed but games started shippping in the $60 and $50 price ranges a lot time ago. $50 is fairly standard for high profile games.

Frankly I'm fine with the montly fee. Many WoW patches have added tons of content, sometimes as much as an expansion pack for other games. Blizzard wasnt the first company to start the pay to play idea anyway.

The voice of common sense told me. It has been a common practice with the first expansions for subscription based MMO games. It doesn't really make sense to market the expansion as a standalone product only (though they may have a standalone version for current owners as well). Releasing the full version along with the expansion makes it more appealing to new players, allowing them to get into the game with a single purchase and install an up to date version so they don't have to worry about patching for hours before getting to play. And because most of their revenues come from the subscription instead of software sales, it's not as important for them to continue selling the original game separately from the expansion as it is to just get people into the game.

I will be very surprised if every copy of The Burning Crusade will require a separate purchase of the original game.

Icon Idea

It's likely that the expansion includes the original game as a single DVD. Maybe BOTH on a single DVD actually... Current boxes have the game on 5 CDs I believe, so I hope they're not gonna do the expansion on another 2-3 CDs. Even though not everybody has a DVDROM drive, that'd be a bit of a friggin' bother installing all of it...

at least the original was on 4 CD's, dunno if they've now included patches so it would take 5th CD or something, though
