Default PS3 Backwards Compatability?

This may be a stupid question as I may have read right over the information but is the PS3 backwards compatible?

I think it was mentioned briefly in the conference, and at GDC.

As long as you don't want to enjoy that silly little rumble feature on any of your PS2 games.

I haven't heard a peep from the show regarding this. They printed it all over the place for the X360 for the PS3 it seems to be very hush hush.

They are probably still in early phases of emulating the ps2 and don't want to promise something if they run into trouble.

On a side note. Does the the ps3 have enough memory bandwidth to emualte the ps2's embedded dram?

A case of selective hearing? It was mentioned in the conference.

Yup.

Transcript from the conference:

Quote:
"Back-catalog compatibility. When we introduced Playstation 2 in 2000, it supported many formats. Playstation games, Playstation 2 games, Audio CD's, and DVD video playback. With Playstation 3, we are taking it to the next level. Not only will Playstation 3 support Blu-ray video, and Playstation 3 games, but also all of the formats that I just mentioned." -Kaz Hirai

Start MGS PS1, play the game, meet Psychomantis, hear him asking you to put your pad down... the pad doesn't move the least... bitch about SONY being lame...

MGS being the game of the PS1 IMO, it's really a shame it will suffer from the lack of rumble in the PS3 pad

I agree...then again, if Sony does accomplish backwards compatibility with the vast majority of their catalogue, I'd let this one slide.
