Because 22 mins of high def is a lot of data.

1.3GB / (22*60) is less than 1MB/sec or roughly7.8787 Mb/sec which is allowed even under normal SD mpeg2 DVD's

That's not big, that's only 8.2Mbit/s.

DVDs are up to 9Mbit/s (typically around 6Mbit/s though).

Cheers

Hehe. Here we see the difference between using 1024 and 1000 for the multiplications

[edit] Using 1024 is obivously the correct way to go, but I used 1000 as a quick approximation as my calc has nice buttons to do G and M etc. [/edit]

Unfortunately Australia's HDTV standard is half that of the rest of the world.
Only channel 9 offer 1080i HDTV everything else follows the (sub)standard of 540p.

What do you guys recommend I do about compression?

Are you still complaining about the size of the file? You would end up with a much bigger one if they went to higher bitrates (which would be required to get decent quality at 1080i)

I would LOVE to reduce file size without much loss in quality.

Well try another format.
Divx, Mpeg4, H.264 can all give better compression than mpeg2.

it's not the size that counts...

it's how you use it...
