Icon Exclaim Virtual Space in Game Sold for $100,000

Quote:
A virtual space resort being built in the online role-playing game, Project Entropia, has been snapped up for $100,000 (£56,200).

Jon Jacobs, aka Neverdie, won the auction for the as yet unnamed resort in the game, which lets thousands of players interact with each other.

Entropia also allows gamers to buy and sell virtual items using real cash.

The space station is billed as a "pleasure paradise". Last year, a gamer bought an island for $26,500 (£13,700).

The space station is described as a "monumental project" in the "treacherous, but mineral rich" Paradise V Asteroid Belt and comes with mining and hunting taxation rights.
Madness, pure madness

Insanity indeed!

From the title I thought this thread was going to be about a company paying for advertising space in a game, $100k to just play in a game is nuts!

given the rapid obsolescence of the technology, i'd find it impossible to justify this expense. not like it's real estate (always there, they don't make more)

of course lording it over a virtual population may provide some insights into real life, and if i were a billionaire gamer, i would love a consequence free 'lab' to goof off in.

Depending on how cash is traded for items in the game there could be a real life money making market there if he can tap the money changing hands with a % of sales or a flat fee for trades.

guess it hinges on how many people like getting soaked for virtual swag. i like virtual economy, but i also like no consequences of virtual world. i can be different (escapist) than i am in real life. if that's tied to myreal bank account, im suddenly 'me' again.

True dat, if money wasn't any issue to me and $100k was like blowing $20 it would be kind of fun.

Still, I think I'd prefer three new 350Zs....

I'd put that money into a real house.

i've never achieved the depth that i suspect some MMORPG players share. i have interest, but it doesn't consume my every waking hour that way. i suppose that crowd may be interested in purchasing (for real) hard to find items. i wouldn't, cause i 'think' i know im not into any game long enough to justify it. in fact i've never enjoyed MMORPG (2 i tried) very much (earth & beyond, star wars galaxies) neither were what i imagined they'd be...(complete virtual world of realtime freedom). i dunno why people pay that monthly fee for what they get on top of game price. i initially thought that's what i was buying.

unless i had real money to burn of course. (already had 3 350Z's). at some point everything is just another thing i suppose.

I was thinking the same thing, sure paying big money for something in a game like that sounds crazy, but how crazy would it be if he could actually turn a profit on his investment?

I would like to own a big jail in a MMORPG. Just think of all the cruel things happening, PvP-Kill, stealing everything thats not nailed down, players leaving corpses of their comrades in the wild... after looting them. (And people claim FPS have bad influence)
Cautions woulve been paid in real money of course

now that woudl be hillarious if he would tax the gamers and they would still have reason to go to his land

The thing is in that game, the in-game credits are woth real money. The game is free, but you have to pay for credits at an exchange rate of $1US to $10 in game. So these guys mho buy a $100,000 piece of land stand to make a respectable profit.
