Default Processor in Device Manager

What's the point of this driver in WinXP's device manager?
What does it actually do?

It's because Windows XP can run on a wide range of processors. Whilst they are all x86 based they can vary radically in their features. For instance, a driver is needed to enable AMD PowerNow! technology under Windows XP, hence you have the amdk7.sys driver. Pentium 4 would have something different for it's specific features.

I'd imagine part of the reason is so a user can verify the hardware installed in the computer as well.
