More like playing hardball with Toshiba to get them at or below cost. Toshiba needs x360 if they even have a chance of beating BR. And even that probably wouldn't be enough.

MS are really being daft if they still haven't made a final decision regarding HD-DVD yet, IMO. It's only a few months until launch.

Am I the only one who thinks this is so?

Anyway, looking forward to the show. Bring on the next gen :]

I agree, they're just waiting to drop the bomb according to Toshiba.

Well if they're going to drop it they're going to drop it in like 2 hours so let's all just avoid the speculating and wait it out.

A HD-DVD would be slower than 12XDVD, right?

If so that would/could bring problems to the launch games, plus increase the price, I prefer a simple DVD on it, or something that give even more performance to the console.

A HD DVD drive can read DVDs at 12X if required.

Yes it's similar to how a 16XDVD drive can read CDs at 24X etc. HD DVD drives even if it's 1X can read DVDs at up to 16X and CDs at up to 48X. If MS goes with HD DVD, developers can continue to release games on DVD just like how PS2 games were first released on CD. Later they can switch to HD DVD if they need the space and accepting the slower transfer rates that comes with it so they need to design their game engines around that. It's not really a waste if they include HD DVD movie playback.

Has Toshiba or anyone said what #x speed HD-DVDs will launch at? Perhaps it may not be slower than 12x DVD?

If I recall correctly phillips said they'd launch later this year with 6xBDs... that's something like 328Mbps... if BD can do it why can't HD-DVD? Granted different technologies, but I'd imagine it easier on HD-DVDs than BDs, no?

That is good to give dev more options (althoug I dont bother with multiple DVDs), but I agree that if HD movies playback is built in that "reduce" the waste (but personally only if they can keep theprice).

Anyway, I always had belived in a two versions console .

BTW I think they already have a agrement with samsung, but not sure :?

Hmmm, interesting. A classic FF remake would be nice, but I suspect they'll be announcing something new.......

It simply boils down to cost. It cost more to have a 4X HD DVD drive because you need a higher power laser. High power BLUE lasers are very rare and expensive.

Samsung will be making HD DVD drives for PC at a joint factory owned by both themself and Toshiba at TSST (Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology). This is where their current DVD drives are being made.

I would pay for FF VI or VII with next-gen graphics. I'm sure hundreds of thousands would, too. I'd also pay for any of Square's "other" PS1 RPG's, such as Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, etc, redone.

Which ever platform gets a followup to Vagrant Story I will not hestitate to buy. Although the team behind VS is busy with FFXII, still I hope to see a VS sequel next-gen, ditto for a new Chrono game..........

I couldn't agree more, Square's vision for these RPGs were so far ahead of the technology available. Would be awesome to see them updated with next-gen tech

The closest thing you get to a Chrono game is Xenosaga. The original team by the chrono series has been scattered throughout Namco Tri-Ace and Square. The likelihood of another Chrono is pretty low. Square likes to have the remake teams consist of as much as possible of the original teams, as with the PS1 remakes of the old NES/SNES FFs.

FFVII won't happen out of the sheer fact it was tech demo'd on the PS3... that'd be an insult if I ever saw one. I doubt we'll see any FFs after 7, since S-E'd think it too early. That, in my mind, leave only FF6 as a possability.
