Uuuuh, wouldn't this be the USB-HID class?

Or did microsoft go off and create another half baked protocol to solve a problem already solved?

Uhmmm... Kinda?

I think they were trying to standardize controllers a bit between the pc and the xbox as far as how many buttons, joysticks, ect... a controller had (not sure if it has anything to do with where said stuff is located specifically on the controller though).

It's not really universal if it only works with windows and the xbox, now is it.

Universal with microsoft products.

Then again, microsoft pretty much IS the software universe, so it's close enough in reality.

I wonder if this is basically the thing Chris Donahue hinted at quite some time back.

I just want to know if it'll support USB keyboards and mouse.

I'm sure it is, a unified Xbox/PC controller was announced during the XNA initiative some time ago. This is a good thing IMO, it's not like PC FPS/RTS/MMORPG's will abandon the keyboard/mouse combo, but other console ports and action games will see a benefit from a standardized controller. Sigh...if only this could have been out before Beyond Good & Evil hit the PC.

The only questions remaining are:

1) Will PC purchasers have to wait until the Xbox 360 is introduced to get one? I'm guessing yes.

2) Will the "standard" be more than just the Xbox controller, and rather a set of specifications so Logitech/etc aren't left out in the cold? Again, I'm assuming so.

The only "downside" is that expect PC gamepads to mirror the third-party offerings in console country, meaning that for all intents and purposes there will be very little deviation in style. Not that PC gamepads can go anywhere but up, mind you.

Like the move of the black/white buttons to the shoulder as well, pretty much my only gripe with the S controller.

Er...the controller? If you mean the Xbox360, yes it will - but MS has stated that will require explicit developer support to be enabled in games, and they're not exactly encouraging it. I'd wager you'll at least see mouse support for RTS ports though, don't expect keyboard or mouse in most other games, especially if they want to keep an even playing field as much as possible in online FPS's.

Hehe, I'm sure the Linux/OSX guys could put it to use as well.
