Default Using search engines

I know this seems very noobish but I don't believe many people really know how to search.

When I was doing my OS assignment I've had a lot of trouble using search to gain credible information sources about Windows and Linux which lead to my OS assignment being sub-par.

I don't believe the majority of people know how to really use search, most people like myself either type in a question or use a few words like "linux memory management vs windows"

I get *some* useful results but the sites could come from everywhere and may not be credible.

I'm not being silly, but search seems more difficult than I imagine. :?

It depends what kind of search you are onto: sometimes I use several words, those that I think describe best what I'm looking for, usually adding a "+" before each of them. But not TOO many words.

So the trick is to use the right synonyms and keep it short in your query?

Mainly. But there are other tricks...for istance, let's say that I'm looking for some kinds of reviews, and you know, most of the reviews have got some (usual) phrases in common, so you can put one that crosses your mind between " ... " +cardname (or +whateverisimportant ): that could make your day.

Try searching for virtual machines that aren't Java.

Christ, what a needle/haystack search.

Cristic, that's what I'm talking about.
Knowing how to refine your search to be perfect.

I wish I had your Googling skills.

The keyword there is refine.
Start out with a fairly loose description, and then refine it by adding terms and excluding terms to specify what you are after more closely.

You don't have to just use Google. Other engines will rank pages differently which may be what you need.

Its cuts an amazing amount of hits out that would be useful. In discussing VM, the word JAVA almost always is included, even if its not a JAVA VM.

Yes, I know what you mean.

K.I.L.E.R.: you can also use the advanced google search. Most people overlook this. I also have never used it.
Google's advanced search tips can also be useful.
