Both S3 and XGI are basically playing the same move as nVidia. The 2D core is opensource while everything 3D is propriatary. It's a start, but until someone actually releases opensource 3D drives it's not terribly exciting. The 2D stuff is pretty much old hat now.

yea this SOUNDS exciting until you read into it... really what would XGI loose from opening their 3d acceleration portion of their drivers up? I can see a lot of upsides.

VIA has had it's source code available for some time, it was simply released more publically, now you don't have to sign up to their developer program or some such.
