Default The Bard's Tale Demo

Maybe some of you still remember this Apple II game, here's the "remake":
Bard's Tale demo (278 MB)

Note that this remake is more a dungeon crawler Ã* la Diablo.
It does use, by the way, the Snowblind engine of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance fame. It's a console port, so don't expect SM3.0.

I played a port of it on an original Macintosh. Seem to recall it eating up many hours of my life.

Is it really limited to that 1980s-style top down view?

Argh, why is this demo so buggy/crappy?

Seriously, menu options should not show up as "Missing String".

Usually demos are supposed to make you WANT to buy the product, all I felt was an uncontrollable urge to light myself on fire and jump out the window Lord Denethor style. LOL I have played games in Alpha and Beta stages with more polish than this.

Anyone yearning for another disappointing pseudoRPG demo could try out Dungeon Lords.

I wonder if these titles just don't have to worry about the bar being raised by HL2 etc etc because in their genre, there aren't any titles that are actually any good. I mean what else can you play if you want to explore a world? We have the buying power of ferrets.

Edit:

Actually, I've just realised - we're supposed to go MMORPG... Every couple of generations I have another look at one of these and discover 8000 individual ways to play an adolescent American. Is this still true?

This genre is typically the domain of console games, the only really popular PC games of this type seem to have been Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. I bittorrented the demo and have shared it out again almost 400% since, but not bothered to actually install and run it. I think I'll skip that now actually...

QFT

I was excited to see the creator of Wizardry 8 working on another project, but Dungeon Lords is also very dissapointing. Wizardry 8 is one of my favorite RPG's of all time, I can realistically say that me and my wife have enjoyed more play time with W8 than any other game, and I got it in the bargain bin. I would have gladly paid full retail price for that game. *sigh*

hmmm. that's disappointing, because the game was actually quite entertaining for PS2.

I should confess my impression is based on a 2 minute wrestle with the demo. Maybe it picks up.
