While I was kidding about some big confab at ATI recently, the front page of [H] makes me wonder if I should have been kidding. . .

Karma, he got a message. A message .. from Gad.
De, I was thinking the same thing, but if it's really backwards-compatible, they could get away with launching with just a handful of games. If it looks good, you could almost justify it as a sort of PStwo launch: a more svelte Xbox, but $300 and with mostly untapped potential. |

from all the rumours / hints / speculation that I have read on various sites, the June date you mention, may indeed be the date that the final Xbox 360 hardware is done..... but it won't be arriving on store shelves until October or November according to my info. gathered from various rumours / hints / speculation on various sites: - the Xbox dev. kits that were in the hands of developers since months ago, are alpha 2 dev. kits with dual Power Mac G5 CPUs and a Radeon X800 Pro GPU - in May (probably in time for E³) developers will get beta dev. kits with an early revision R500 [similar to how ID had access to early R300 hardware, which they used to demo Doom 3 in E³ 2002], as well as beta versions of most of the other hardware actually going into Xbox 360... [BTW the actual codename of the GPU according to an ATI employee is "Xenos" (according to this person, they have never referred to the Xbox 360 GPU as "R500", at least internally)] - any last minute tweaks/adjustments to the hardware will basically have to be made in May/June because sometime around June, perhaps the date you mention Hellbinder, the hardware will be finalized , [retailers may get empty shells of the final Xbox 360 to display/advertise/hype up perhaps behind glass panels in their stores, too] - soon after that point, the final dev kits containing final hardware will be produced, and sent to developers... and soon after this time, MS will start ramping up production for the launch |

But wasn't there supposed to be a second developers beta around then? By golly that would put a whole different spin on Orton's 4th quarter (June-Aug) revenue predictions. . .

Square hasn't signed anything with M$ yet and the producer stuff you think about is just a new start-up studio which uses a LOT of ex-square staff that freelance nowadays. don't expect a final fantasy game on the x36... |

So the devs already have an alpha version of R500 and May will see the beta version of R500 if Gamespy is to be believed who in this case do sound credible IMO.

Personally I would go along with Wunderchu's assessment.

Eh..
All i know is that Gamestop/Eb's internal system still has it listed as June 6th. It sounds absurd but its still in there as such... Bottom line is its pretty close to launching one way or the other. |

That's why Valve is waiting with releasing HL2 on the xbox, they just ported it to a mac platform. And Ati's 6 million dollars will once again be wise spent... Can you imagine Gabe holding one of those tiny Japanese xbox controllers and saying "it's comming out september 13th people, get your HDR crowbars ready!" |

A crazy as it sounds i have been hearing (from people in the know) June 6th for the first version to hit the street for over 6 months now.
Of course that is likely not going to happen i guess. But that date was confirmed to me as close as 2 weeks ago. It does seem highly unlikely now that it is only 50 days away. I do think its going to be a lot closer than you guys are thinking. |
