Default How safe are....(pc/net related)

Those so called security measures employed by many a site?

I've been thinking of doing some transactions with credit cards or maybe even investing online(right now I only do money order with trusted sites), but I'm not entirely sure this stuff is safe with all the cr@p that's floating around.

So how safe are they?

Can I use a public terminal and log-on, make transactions without problems?

Can I use a regular net-surfing pc?

Or do I need some supah-firewall, highest security setting custom rigged pc?

That is how bad are the spyware/pharming/etc problems?

latest BIG problem was for all browsers with IDN support (only IE doesnt have it)..... as far as i know, they disabled IDN in Firefox now due to that.
